Remington, Frederic
Remington, Frederic
American painter, sculptor, and writer, born in Canton, New York, and educated at the Art Students League, New York City. Frederic Remington is famous for the lively scenes, in paint and in bronze, of the Old West that form the subject matter of most of his works. In the Spanish-American War he served as a war correspondent and artist. Among his oil paintings are The Outlier (1909, Brooklyn Museum, New York City) and Cavalry Charge on the Southern Plains (1907, Metropolitan Museum, New York City). Frederic Remington pictured life in the American West in so lively and heroic a manner that his image of the 'Wild West' imposed itself on the world and provided the base for Hollywood's subsequent development of it.

    Died Connecticut, 1909
Frederic Remington was born in Canton, New York. Remington was the son of the local newspaper publisher, and in 1878 entered the Yale School of Fine Arts for one year, excelling at football and art. Due to his father's death, he could not afford to return to school,
He constantly traveled west and not only portrayed the West in his art but lived the life as well. Remington became a skilled cowboy, he prospected gold in the Apache country of the Arizona territory, and he operated a ranch in Kansas in addition to working in the local saloon. Remington is praised as the most important painter documenting life in the vanishing West.
In a career that spanned less than twenty-five years, Remington produced more than 3,000 drawings and paintings, about 25 bronze sculptures, a novel, a Broadway play, and over one hundred articles and stories. The "Marlboro Man" in the well-known cigarette ad was one of Remington's illustrations. His legacy is more about a portrayal of the heroic figures who settled the West and their life-and-death struggles, rather than so much about what he experienced personally on his journeys. He gave Americans stories about what they wanted to see in themselves - independence, bravery and optimism. He inspired a love of the West and is reputed to be America's most popular nineteenth century artist. Frederic Remington passed away in 1909 at the age of forty-eight

Few artists of the American West could equal the breadth of experience of FREDERIC SACKRIDER REMINGTON (1861-1909) . From the Santa Fe Trail to the Oregon Trail, he came to possess firsthand knowledge as a rancher, a military scout, a hunter and trapper, and as a reporter. Few of his contemporaries were equally devoted to capturing that particular historical moment, the three brief decades that saw the taming of the expansive and dangerous western frontier. Looking back at his career in 1905, Remington wrote: "I knew the wild riders and the vacant land were about to vanish forever...and the more I considered the subject, the bigger the forever loomed. Without knowing how to do it, I began to record some facts around me, and the more I looked the more the panorama unfolded."
As did his talent. His evolving clarity of purpose and the naturally vivid subject matter inspired Remington to compulsively record the details, producing thousands of illustrations in the course of his twenty-three year career. Their accuracy, immediacy and drama, anchored by his equestrian expertise, fused his functions as artist and historian.

Frederic Remington (FRED rik RIM ing ton) was born in 1861 in Canton, New York. His father who was a colonel in the cavalry, was a commander in the Civil War. He told his son stories about that era. He sent Frederic to a military academy, but the boy was not satisfied there. They sent him to study art at Yale, but his main interest there was playing football. He returned home when his father died.
Remington was a person who liked to hunt, fish, and ride horses. He was a large person; just 5'9" tall, but he weighed 300 pounds.
He tried different jobs, but he just couldn't "find himself". He bought a sheep ranch in Kansas, but it was unsuccessful. Next he tried other kinds of businesses; a hardware store and a saloon. He first visited the Montana Territory in 1881. The West was changing fast as more and more people migrated. Remington wanted to record the lifestyle of the times. He drew Cowboys of Arizona Roused by a Scout on some wrapping paper and mailed it to a New York magazine. It was printed on the magazine cover of Harper's Weekly in 1882.

  • Home Episodes February 17th, 2003 Frederic Remington About Frederic Remington With his dynamic representations of cowboys and cavalrymen, bronco busters and braves, 19th-century artist Frederic Remington created a mythic image of the American West that continues to inspire America today. His technical ability to reproduce the physical beauty of the Western landscape made him a sought-after illustrator, but it was his insight into the heroic nature of American settlers that made him great. This painter, sculptor, author, and illustrator, who was so often identified with the American West, surprisingly spent most of his life in the East. More than anything, in fact, it was Remington’s connection with the eastern fantasy of the West, and not a true knowledge of its history and people, that his admirers responded to.
