Gerrit Rietveld (1888-1964)
Dutch minimalist architect and designer Gerrit Rietveld was a member of the De Stijl movement. Significant for his work is how he pared his design down to basic cubist elements and often used primary colours to emphasise the different planes. Most of his furniture was designed and manufactured to accompany his architectural commissions.
His lengthy career began already as a young boy in his father’s carpentry shop in Utrecht. The shop, catering to the bourgeois taste of the local clientele, produced quality period pieces of furniture. He left the shop in 1917 to set up an establishment of his own. This move marked a definite break with the traditions of his father’s work.
Rietveld’s career proceeded uninterrupted until 1943. He then was subsequently barred from practising as an architect, due to his refusal to join the Nazi-controlled Kulturkammer. After the war, the country and Rietveld gradually returned to normality, and Rietveld continued his work until he died at an age of 76.
Among his numerous furniture models, The Zig Zag chair, The Red and Blue Chair, the Schelling and Military series remain as eternal design icons. Gerrit Rietveld’s designs are to be found in the most important museum collections over the world.

Rietveld, Gerrit Thomas (1888–1964)
Architectural History Originally a furniture builder, Gerrit Rietveld was partially responsible for the architectural ideals of the De Stijl movement of the early 1920s. His Schröder House epitomized many of the movement’s beliefs, including simplicity of form, verticals and horizontals that intersect and penetrate each other, primary colors, asymmetrical balance, and elements separated by space (Brown, 1958). Born in Utrecht, Netherlands, Rietveld joined his father’s furniture workshop at a young age. He attended evening classes in architecture, studying with the architect P. J. C. Klaarhamer. By 1917, he opened his own furniture workshop, and a year later he met various members of the newly formed group calling themselves De Stijl (Brown, 1958). Beginning his architectural practice in Utrecht he felt an affinity for the modern movement. For several years, Rietveld exhibited his furniture across Europe, and even sent a chair to a Bauhaus show in Weimar in 1923 (Brown, 1958). Of all his well-known furniture designs, the Red Blue chair was the most exhibited and publicized. The chair was constructed of plywood planes, painted red and blue, floating through black vertical and horizontal sticks that overlapped each other. The compositionally elegant chair resembles a three-dimensional version of a Mondrian painting, although it was built prior to Mondrian’s mature work. Rietveld routinely destroyed many of his architectural drawings to make room for his latest projects; but with his prolific practice, evidence of his architectural drawing skills remains (Baroni, 1977; Vöge and Overy, 1993). These drawings demonstrate various stages in Rietveld’s design process: construction diagrams, alterations and refinement, and ambiguous first proposals.

Rietveld, Gerrit Thomas
(b. June 24, 1888, Utrecht, Neth.d. June 25, 1964, Utrecht), Dutch architect and furniture designer notable for his application of the tenets of the de Stijl movement. He was an apprentice in his father's cabinetmaking business from 1899 to 1906 and later studied architecture in Utrecht. Rietveld began his association with the movement known as de Stijl in 1918. At about the same time he created his famous red-and-blue armchair, which, in its emphasis on geometry and in its use of primary colours, was a realization of de Stijl principles. In 1921 he designed a small Amsterdam jewelry shop, one of the first examples of the application of these principles to architecture. His masterpiece is the Schroeder House in Utrecht (1924), remarkable for its interplay of right-angle forms, planes, and lines, and for its use of primary colours. His mass-produced houses at Utrecht (1931-34) were closely related in style. He remained associated with de Stijl until it was dissolved in 1931. From 1936 until after World War II, Rietveld devoted himself to furniture design. After the war he received a number of important architectural commissions, including the De Ploeg Textile Works (1956), Bergeyk; a housing development (1954-56), Hoograven; and the art academy (1962), Arnhem.
