Rivera, Diego,
in full A government scholarship enabled Rivera to enter the San Carlos Academy of Fine Arts, but after taking part in student riots he was expelled. With a stipend from the government of Santa Cruz, he transferred his studies to Spain. Growing restless, he made a sketching tour through western Europe, ultimately settling in Paris. In 1910 he exhibited 40 of his works in Mexico. Public response was favourable, but Rivera had not yet developed the emphatic, vigorous style that was to win him fame. Returning to Europe, he exhibited in Paris and hiked through Italy, inspecting frescoes. After a one-man retrospective exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, New York City, he was commissioned to paint murals for the Detroit Institute of Arts (1932), one of which, "Vaccination," was attacked as a caricature of the Holy Family. Rivera weathered the Detroit crisis but not a New York City uproar the following year. His "Man at the Crossroads" fresco, executed for Rockefeller Center, was greeted with picketing and newspaper assaults because Rivera had included the figure of Lenin in the picture. The mural was destroyed by the centre but was reproduced by Rivera at the Palace of Fine Arts, Mexico City. In the late 1930s and early 1940s Rivera was considered too radical for further American commissions; to his associates in the Mexican Communist Party, which he had joined in the 1920s, he was not sufficiently a social realist. His popular appeal, however, helped him carry on. His most ambitious and gigantic mural, an epic on the history of Mexico for the National Palace, Mexico City, was unfinished when he died.

Jose Diego Maria Rivera-Barrientos, along with his twin brother Jose Carlos Maria, was born on 8 December 1886 (some sources say 13 December), in the city of Guanajato, Mexico. They were the two eldest sons of Diego Rivera and Maria del Pilar Barrientos. Both the parents were school teachers. The father was of Creole origin; according to rumor the painter's paternal grandfather had been born in Russia and immigrated to Mexico. Diego's mother was one-quarter Indian. Diego's twin brother would die in infancy. In 1892, the family moved to Mexico city, where Diego was sent to the Carpantier Catholic College. Diego exhibited a vocation for painting early in life. In 1896, he began attending evening classes at the San Carlos Academy of Art. Two years later, he enrolled at the Academy full-time, despite the wishes of his father, who wanted a military career for his son. Diego studied under such painters as Santiago Rebull, Felix Parra and Jose Maria Velasco, his artistic education firmly grounded in classical principles. Continued...

Diego Rivera - Frida Kahlo
January 24 - June 1, 1998
Every day from 10 am to 6 pm.

The Pierre Gianadda Foundation in Martigny is celebrating its 20th anniversary by putting on a double exhibition which will be devoted to the famous Mexican couple of painters.
This is quite some event because, to date, neither Diego Rivera nor Frida Kahlo have ever been shown in Switzerland and so far these two artists have never been exhibited together.
This will be the first exhibition of these artists in Switzerland. Quite an event it will be, as we said, for their works, considered a national treasure in Mexico, are those of a politically and artistically committed couple and it embodies all the ardour of the modern post-revolutionary age, illuminated by the Communist ideal, the return to national awareness and the struggle for Mexican and Amerindian culture.
The purpose of the exhibition is to provide "something to be seen" through the eyes of these two leading artists in the cultural panorama of the XX century and to follow the chronological development of two strong, creative temperaments that opposed and set one another off through their conflictual and complex life. Diego Rivera, a mural painter, designer, graphic artist, illustrator, architect and sculptor is certainly the best-known but not the least contested of Latin-American artists.
After a classical education, at the age of 20, he set forth for Europe, settled in Paris - in Montparnasse, to be precise - where he met Modigliani, Mondrian, Picasso, Breton as well as Ehrenbourg and Trotsky. Through Angelina Beloff, his first mistress, and then Merevna Vorobiev, he penetrated the Russian community. During a trip to Spain, he discovered the works of Goya and El Greco which affected him deeply.

Source Notes
LMR quotes Bertram Wolfe, "Diego Rivera." The biography describes his mom's earlier three stillbirths, then states that on his day her sister had run errands all day in preparation, as her labor had begun. Her sister made a last trip to the apothecary, and when his dad came home, there were twin boys. No time stated, late day or early evening is implied.

    Diego Riveras Meisterschaft
    Von Tim Tower
    15. September 1999

Rivera, Diego
Born: 1886 AD
Died: 1957 AD, at 70 years of age.
Nationality: Mexican
Categories: Artists Painters
1886 - Diego Rivera born on the 8th of December in Guanajuato City, Guanajuato. He was was a Mexican painter and muralist.
1907 - A government scholarship enabled Rivera to study art at the Academy of San Carlos in Mexico City from age 10, and a grant from the governor of Veracruz enabled him to continue his studies in Europe.
1909 - He studied in Spain and settled in Paris, where he became a friend of Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, and other leading modern painters.
1921 - He returned to Mexico after meeting with fellow Mexican painter David Alfaro Siqueiros. Both sought to create a new national art on revolutionary themes that would decorate public buildings in the wake of the Mexican Revolution.
1923 - He began painting the walls of the Ministry of Public Education building in Mexico City, working in fresco and completing the commission. These huge frescoes, depicting Mexican agriculture, industry, and culture, reflect a genuinely native subject matter and mark the emergence of Rivera's mature style. Rivera defines his solid, somewhat stylized human figures by precise outlines rather than by internal modeling.
1926 - 1927 - His next major work was a fresco cycle in a former chapel at what is now the National School of Agriculture at Chapingo. His frescoes there contrast scenes of natural fertility and harmony among the pre-Columbian Indians with scenes of their enslavement and brutalization by the Spanish conquerors.
