Rodin, Auguste
Rodin, Auguste (1840-1917). The French artist Auguste Rodin had a profound influence on 20th-century sculpture. His works are distinguished by their stunning strength and realism. Rodin refused to ignore the negative aspects of humanity, and his works confront distress and moral weakness as well as passion and beauty. Francois-Auguste-Rene Rodin was born on Nov. 12, 1840, in Paris. At the age of 14 he entered the Petite Ecole, a school of decorative arts in Paris. He applied three times to study at the renowned Ecole des Beaux-Arts but was rejected each time. In 1858 he began to do decorative stonework in order to make his living. Four years later the death of his sister Marie so traumatized Rodin that he entered a sacred order. The father superior of the order recognized Rodin's talents and encouraged him to pursue his art. In 1864 Rodin met a seamstress named Rose Beuret. She became his life companion and was the model for many of his works. That year Rodin submitted his Man with a Broken Nose to the Paris Salon. It was rejected but later accepted under the title

From 1870 to 1875 he continued in the same trade in Brussels and then briefly visited Italy. In the Salon of 1877 he exhibited a nude male figure, The Age of Bronze (1876; Paris). It was both extravagantly praised and condemned; his critics unjustly accused him of having made a cast from life. François-Auguste-René Rodin (12 November 1840 – 17 November 1917), known as Auguste Rodin /oʊˈɡuːst roʊˈdæn/ oh- g oo ... dan ), was a French sculptor . Although Rodin is generally considered the progenitor of modern sculpture, he did not set out to rebel against the past. He was schooled traditionally, took a craftsman-like approach to his work, and desired academic recognition, although he was never accepted into Paris's foremost school of art. Sculpturally, Rodin possessed a unique ability to model a complex, turbulent, deeply pocketed surface in clay . Many of his most notable sculptures were roundly criticized during his lifetime. They clashed with the predominant figure sculpture tradition, in which works were decorative, formulaic, or highly thematic. Rodin's most original work departed from traditional themes of mythology and allegory , modeled the human body with realism, and celebrated individual character and physicality. Rodin was sensitive of the controversy surrounding his work, but refused to change his style. Successive works brought increasing favor from the government and the artistic community.

Auguste Rodin entered the cole Impriale de Dessin, a goverment school, at fourteen. Afterwards he was refused three times at the cole des Beaux-Arts. In 1864 he met the seamstress 1864 and she became a companion for life and the mother of his only son. Rodin did decorative stonework for Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse and in 1875 travelled to Italy to study the work of Michelangelo. Back in France he exhibited "The Age of Bronze" at the Salon of 1877. This caused a scandal, because critics accused Rodin of using a casting of a live model to reach such a realistic effect.
He continued to shock the academic world with his revolutionary sculptures and made up his own rules. His "Monument to Balzac" was scorned at and this caused Rodin a lot of pain. Fortunately there were admirers as well and in 1900 he was a very famous and well respected artist, who received many commissions for portraits and public monuments.
Rodin was involved in several love affairs and he married Rose Beuret only seventeen days before his death. In 1919 the Htel Byron (Paris) was turned into a Rodin Museum. Another Rodin museum can be found at Meudon, where the artist was buried as well.

Auguste Rodin was born in Paris on the 12th November 1840 and died in Meudon on the 17th November 1917.
One would like to avoid comparisons between the most highly regarded artists whose genius would inevitably render them far superior to the rest. Thus it is with Rodin. Few today could dispute that he is the best of all late nineteenth century sculptors, or even one of the best of all time. His works have vigor, dynamism, and sensuality; their characteristically impressionistic rendering of nuances and strength today receives unanimous approval.

Not far from The Thinker stands Rodin's monumental masterpiece, The Gates of Hell, installed in the garden of the Museum in 1937. By a decree of 16 August 1880, Rodin received a commission from the Directorate of Fine Arts for a monumental door which was to be decorated with low reliefs inspired by The Divine Comedy Door of Paradise in the Baptistery of Florence by Ghiberti (1425-1452). However, he soon changed his mind about dividing the door into sections, preferring the example of Michelangelo's Last Judgement in the Sistine Chapel The third maquette (exhibited in room 10) shows that already in 1880 its composition was close to the one finally adopted.
He ignored two thirds of the poem by Dante to concentrate on its darkest side, the part about Hell. The first year was primarily devoted to sketches which followed the text of the poem closely, but once he started modelling, he only retained a few identifiable characters, such as Paolo and Francesca, Ugolino and his Children, The Shades

In February 1871, after his laborious early years, demonstrated in the Rodin Museum by the busts of his father (1860) and Father Eymard (1863), the mask of The Man with a Broken Nose which was rejected by the Salon in 1865, Mignon which is probably the portrait of his mistress Rose Beuret, and the impressive Young Woman in a Flowered Hat (circa 1865), a brilliant example of modelling in terracotta, Rodin left Paris for Brussels to join Carrier-Belleuse who had invited him to participate in the decoration of the Stock Exchange. Many sculptors worked on this project in which Rodin seems to have played only a secondary role. His main task, as in Paris, was to execute elegant groups which his employer signed and sold under his own name. But Carrier was soon on bad terms with his young assistant and dismissed him, probably in June.
