Of all the works by Rodin, the most famous one is unquestionably the great Thinker. It was modelled in 1880-1882 for The Gates of Hell, and exhibited in its original size (H. 71.5 cm) in Copenhagen in 1888. It was enlarged in 1902 and exhibited in this form at the Salon of 1904 where it aroused strong reactions from the press. It was on this occasion that Gabriel Mourey, editor of the magazine Les Arts de la vie launched a subscription for a bronze "offered to the people of Paris" to erase the affront caused by the refusal of the statue of Balzac in 1898. THE COLLECTIONS
OF MEUDON
Antoinette Le Normand-Romain Fragments ("abattis")

The sculptures kept in the Museum at Meudon, only some of which are on display, form what is known as a "studio collection", that is to say, all the sketches, studies, maquettes, variations and original models carefully kept by the artist thoughout his life and, in the case of Rodin, donated to the French State in 1916. Most of them are in plaster. For a long time, plaster was not considered to be a noble material and had little value. However, it is of vital interest when studying 19th century sculpture for a plaster model is usually the first visible stage of a work-in-progress and, consequently, the closest to the hand of the sculptor.
Since the practice of direct carving had been abandoned in the 19th century, the sculptor was above all a modeller. He searched for the first idea of his composition in clay. He made his study by working with balls or sticks of clay which he shaped with the help of his thumbs, sometimes leaving very visible imprints, like the incisions made by a knife or roughing-chisel to emphasize certain effects. The next step was a more accurate maquette or model, mounted on an inner armature, which had to be wrapped in a damp cloth between working sessions to keep the clay malleable.

, the mould consisted of forty six parts, in turn formed of an infinite number of pieces. Each fragment is therefore prepared separately and then assembled together, a process which can be quite difficult for each piece must fit perfectly.

THE MARBLE SCULPTURES
Antoinette Le Normand-Romain The Hand of God
marble carved by Soudbinine in 1902

S.988
In 1890, several papers reported on "a rather paradoxical artistic theory : Rodin claims that there is a statue in each block of marble. It is just a question of divining it and bringing it out by removing all that is excessive" ( Le Temps 21 December 1890, La Nouvelliste , 29 December, 1890). This comment is surprising coming from Rodin who, like most of his contemporaries, did not like carving marble very much. Although he allowed himself to be filmed by Sacha Guitry holding a hammer and chisel in front of the great Ariadne in the process of being sculpted (in Ceux de chez nous ), Rodin was first and foremost a modeller, kneading with his hands a soft material, clay, to which he could add or take away at will. Later he would work with plaster, composing new groups based on works modelled long before.
If artists no longer carved marble, it was because a new division of labour had been introduced. Once the clay model was finished and cast, the "original plaster" was handed over to the "pointer" who roughed down the block, then to the "practicien" who carved as much as possible. The latter obviously worked under the supervision of the artist but his accuracy was guided by a "pointing machine" invented in the 19th century by Nicolas Gatteaux. Following the base points as a guide, a rotating head operated by steam after 1844, then by electricity, made it possible to come close to the desired shape in successive stages, then to accurately transcribe the modelling, with the sculptor usually adding the final touches.

In 1347, following a particularly long siege, the city of Calais was obliged to surrender to Edward III, the King of England. Six burghers, Eustache de Saint-Pierre, Jean d'Aire, Jacques and Pierre de Wissant, Jean de Fiennes, Andrieu d'Andres, were willing to sacrifice their lives and accepted to hand over the keys of the city to the King. During the 19th century, there were several plans to erect a monument to honour the heroism of these citizens of Calais and to reaffirm the historical identity of the city.
Omer Dewavrin, mayor of Calais, relaunched the idea in 1884, and the city council signed a contract with Rodin in January 1885 to execute a monument. Drawing inspiration from the Chronicles

In 1877, Rodin removed the lance from The Age of Bronze without indicating the meaning of the raised arm, and in 1880, he took away the cross from Saint John the Baptist In his search for perfection, he increasingly suppressed anything he felt was superfluous or which gave too obvious a meaning to the work. In 1896 and 1897, he exhibited in Stockholm, Paris and Dresden The Inner Voice with the arms removed and the right knee knocked off, while insisting that the work was finished in his eyes. It was the first time he frankly admitted that an apparently unfinished figure was a fully accomplished work. He again confirmed his new approach to sculpture shortly afterwards with The Walking Man , often regarded as the symbol of pure creation finally relieved of the weight of a subject. The very image of movement, of which it is in fact an intellectual reconstitution ("It is the artist who is truthful and the photograph which is misleading", Rodin once claimed, "for in reality, time does not come to a standstill", L'Art, 1911), the small version of The Walking Man Saint John the Baptist

Biography
French artist, one of the world's master sculptors whose work influenced countless of other artists in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. His magnificent pieces included "The Kiss," 1886, "The Thinker," 1888 and "The Burghers of Calais" in 1895. Originally trained at the Petite Ecole, a school for training artisans, Rodin was refused admission to the more prestigious and established Ecole des Beaux-Arts three times. Rodin used his status as an outsider from the French art establishment to develop his own style of realism and naturalism revolutionizing French sculpture in the process. By the turn of the century, Rodin was the most celebrated sculptor in France with notoriety in Brussels, London, and Munich. In 1890, he received the Cross of the Legion of Honor. On 12/15/1916, the National Assembly voted to establish the Rodin Museum in the Hotel Biron to house his bronzes, marbles, paintings, drawings and plasters. In 1864, Rodin met Rose Beuret, a seamstress who became his lifelong companion and model. She gave him a son and he married her shortly before his death. Rodin taught his gifted student and lover of almost 15 years, Camille Claudel. She modeled for some of his works.

"It is true that Rodin's art makes overt reference to its own artificiality. When we say that his kind of realism was not seamless, we mean it: his sculptures often exposed the joint lines of the piece molds in which they were cast, as well as the "unfinished" marks of modeling and editing. Fragmentation and repetition functioned in the same way, as instances of the sculptor's processes made evident in his product. Rodin typically made "spare parts" - feet, hands, knees, and so on - and put together his figures from these. And once he made a figure, he would often remake it, by recasting multiple versions and variants. By showing these processes in the partial figures and modular recurrences of his exhibited work, he undercut his own virtuosity as a conjurer of stories in flesh and bone, and introduced an evident self-consciousness about the artificiality of art's means. "Broken parts and replicas were a daily part of a sculptor's working apparatus: every studio in Paris was littered with them. But where others would have completed a work in progress, Rodin said "enough": and where others would have considered a figure made, he made it again - not because he thought these steps would cancel meaning in his work, but because he was willing to see how such decisions might alter the range of meanings he could convey. The truly creative act was to see how such forms could function within - not just independently of, or in antagonism to - his attempts to accord new meaning to the themes he dealt with.
