Biography:

During Albert Pinkham Ryder’s formal education, he contracted a serious illness that impaired his vision. Ryder used painting as a way to pass the time as he recovered, finding that he had some potential to paint seriously. He moved to New York in 1867 and studied under William Edgar Marshall. He then enrolled in the National Academy of Design and traveled to Europe several times. Becoming reclusive in his late life, Ryder converted his subject matter from landscapes to metaphysical paintings inspired by religion and poetry.

Ryder, Albert Pinkham
Albert Pinkham Ryder
While his art shared an emphasis on subtle variations of color with tonalist works of the time, it was unique for accentuating form in a way that some art historians regard as modernist. Ryder was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts as the youngest of four sons. New Bedford, a bustling whaling town in the 19th century, had an intimate connection with the sea that probably supplied artistic inspiration for Ryder later in life. Little is known of his childhood. The 1880s and 1890s are thought of as Ryder's most creative and artistically mature period. His art became more poetic and imaginative, and Ryder wrote poetry to accompany many of his works. His paintings sometimes depicted scenes from literature, opera, and religion. Ryder's signature style is characterized by broad, sometimes ill-defined shapes or stylized figures situated in a dream-like land or seascape. His scenes are often illuminated by dim sunlight or glowing moonlight cast through eerie clouds. Ryder rarely signed his works. - wikipedia Displaying to (of products) Result Pages: Model Product Name+ Price ex VAT Price Buy Now

Ryder, Albert Pinkham
(b . March 19, 1847, New Bedford, Mass., U.S.d. March 28, 1917, Elmhurst, N.Y.), American painter, noted for his highly personal seascapes and mystical allegorical scenes. About 1870 Ryder settled permanently in New York City, where he briefly studied painting. His formal training, however, did little to affect his early work, consisting largely of naive and idyllic landscapes. He made several short trips to Europe, but the paintings in art museums interested him little. He was an imaginative, solitary painter. His lifework of about 150 paintings was produced slowly; his works are, therefore, difficult to date with certainty. Ryder was a mystic and a romantic. Works such as "Toilers of the Sea" reflect his obsession with the sea as well as his notion that man is helpless against the forces of nature. Many of his works, such as his "Jonah," were drawn from the Bible, while other paintings, such as "Macbeth and the Witches," "The Temple of the Mind," and "Siegfried and the Rhine Maidens," were depictions of episodes from William Shakespeare, Edgar Allan Poe, and Richard Wagner. Ryder's works are pervaded by thick, yellow light (usually moonlight), which heightens the mood of such paintings as "The Race Track" or "Death on a Pale Horse." He omitted nonessential details from his paintings, concentrating instead on generalized forms and masses of colour, often applying broad, thick layers of pigment with a palette knife.
