Masami Teraoka
Hawaii State Art Museum Masami Teraoka (born 1936) is a contemporary artist. He was born in 1936 in the town of Onomichi , between Hiroshima and Osaka Japan . He studied art from 1954-59 at the Kwansei Gakuin University in Kobe , Japan where he received his B.A. in Aesthetics . He moved to the United States in 1961 and from 1964-68 attended the Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles , where he received a B.A. and M.F.A. His early work consisted primarily of watercolor paintings and prints that mimicked the flat, bold qualities of ukiyo-e woodblock prints. These paintings, done after his arrival in the United States, often featured the collision of the two cultures. Series such as and 31 Flavors Invading Japan characterize themes in the work in this time period. These pieces blended reality with fantasy, humor with commentary, history with the present. In the 1980s, Teraoka shifted palette and scale to depict AIDS as a subject, transforming his ukiyo-e derived paintings into a darker realm.

He received his art training at the Kwansei Gakuin University in Kobe, Japan and at the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles. Since 1973 he had important solo exhibitions in such renowned places as the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York or the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Although the artist uses the style of traditional Japanese woodblock printing, he is not a printmaker. His art works are watercolors! He used watercolors as he said to "mimic woodblock prints". He is one of the few artists who comment their art works. The following text explanations are by the artist himself.

Modern Japanese Prints from the Permanent Collection
TERAOKA, Masami (b. 1936), McDonald's Hamburger Invading Japan: Chochin-me , 1981-82, screen-print on white wove paper, Harriet B. Bancroft Fund, 1987.98 Through January 23, 2005 A selection of Japanese prints dating from 1950 to the present complements the exhibition Japanese Masters of Mezzotint (sosaku-hanga) movement that originated in 1904. Unlike collaborative woodblock printmaking used for mass-producing traditional ukiyo-e prints, catalytic artists such Onchi Koshiro (1891-1955), Munakata Shiko (1903-1975) and their students (including Sekino, Saito and Sasajima), printed their own works and sought inspiration from Western artistic trends and native folk and Buddhist art. Their commitment to personal self-expression paved the way for the innovative abstract woodblock prints of Yamaguchi Gen, Tajima Hiroyuki, and Hagiwara Hideo, and the Bible-inspired stencil prints of Watanabe Sadao. Contemporary artists have also adopted western lithography, mezzotint, etching, and silkscreen techniques. Many works of international appeal, such as those by Shinoda Toko, Nakazawa Shin'ichi and Teraoka Masami do however remain Japanese in sentiment and in their use of gold leaf, calligraphic elements and/or subject matter.

The game is set in Yamato , a medieval version of Japan ruled by the shogun Tsunayoshi and the daimyōs of the four clans. To become immortal, Tsunayoshi transforms himself into the demon Zanshin, the Dark Warlord, who unleashes his army of darkness to conquer Yamato. Zanshin's forces sweep across Yamato one night, catching the clans by surprise and annihilating them. However, believing that the four daimyōs were killed, Zanshin recalls his soldiers prematurely, leaving one daimyō and seven of his retainers alive.
