From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Portinari Altarpiece Hugo van der Goes Ghent Oudergem , near Brussels , 1482 or 1483) was a Flemish painter. He was, along with Jan van Eyck Rogier van der Weyden Hans Memling and Gerard David , one of the most important of the Early Netherlandish painters Hugo became a member of the painters' guild of Ghent as a master in 1467. In 1468 he was involved in the decoration of the town of Bruges in celebration of the marriage between Charles the Bold and Margaret of York and he provided heraldic decorations for Charles's joyeuse entrée to Ghent in 1469 and again in 1472. He was elected dean of the Ghent guild in 1473 or 1474. In 1475, or some years later, Hugo entered Rooklooster , a monastery near Brussels belonging to the Windesheim Congregation , and professed there as a frater conversus . He continued to paint, and remained at Rooklooster until his death in 1482 or 1483. In 1480 he was called to the town of Leuven to evaluate the Justice Scenes left unfinished by the painter Dieric Bouts on his death in 1475. Shortly after this, Hugo, returning with other members of his monastery from a trip to Cologne, fell into a state of suicidal gloom, declaring himself to be damned. After returning to Rooklooster, Hugo recovered from his illness, and died there. His time at Rooklooster is recorded in the chronicle of his fellow monk, Gaspar Ofhuys. VICTOR HUGO
This document was originally published in The Drama: Its History, Literature and Influence on Civilization, vol. 9 . ed. Alfred Bates. London: Historical Publishing Company, 1906. pp. 11-13.
As Voltaire In his Feuilles d'Automne Autumn Leavesand in other writings Hugo has given sketches of his life, as he wished the world to see and admire it. The biography, professing to be "related by a witness of his life," and attributed to his wife, was largely written by himself with characteristic exaggerations and embelishments. With all his genuine love of humanity, extending to the vicious and degraded, there was joined an overweening vanity which demanded that mankind must be interested in him and his doings. As he lived long in public view in an era of unprecedented activity of the press, the records of his career are abundant from every point of view. But his literary works must be their own vouchers at the bar of the world's judgement. For our purpose we cannot do better than give the substance of Prof. Brander Matthews' verdict on Victor Hugo's dramas. He finds that they are melodramas written by a poet, rather than poetic plays written by a dramatist. In 's works, as in

Victor Hugo
Victor-Marie Hugo was born in Besançon as the son of Joseph-Léopold-Sigisbert Hugo and Sophie Trébuchet. Hugo's father was an officer in Napoleon's army, an enthusiastic republican and ruthless professional soldier, who loved dangers and adventures. After the marriage of his parents had collapsed, he was raised by his mother. In 1807 Sophie took her family for two years from Paris to Italy, where Léopold served as a governor of a province near Naples. When General Hugo took charge of three Spanish provinces, Sophie again joined her husband. Hugo spent the years 1815-1818 in the Pension Cordier in Paris, but most of the classes of the school were held at the Collège Louis-le Grand. He began in early adolescence to write verse tragedies and poetry, and translated Virgil. In 1819, he founded a review with his brothers, the Conservateur Littéraire . Inspired by the example of the statesman and author François René Chateaubriand, Hugo published his first collection of poems

    Goes, Hugo van der
Goes, Hugo van der (d. 1482). The greatest Netherlandish painter of the second half of the 15th century. Nothing is known of his life before 1467, when he became a master in the painters' guild at Ghent. He had numerous commissions from the town of Ghent for work of a temporary nature such as processional banners, and in 1475 he became dean of the painters' guild. In the same year he entered a priory near Brussels as a lay-brother, but he continued to paint and also to travel. In 1481 he suffered a mental breakdown (he had a tendency to acute depression) and although he recovered, died the following year. An account of his illness by Gaspar Ofhuys, a monk at the priory, survives; Ofhuys was apparently jealous of Hugo and his description has been called by Erwin Panofsky `a masterpiece of clinical accuracy and sanctimonious malice'. No paintings by Hugo are signed and his only securely documented work is his masterpiece, a large triptych of the Nativity known as the Portinari Altarpiece (Uffizi, Florence, c.1475-76). This was commissioned by Tommaso Portinari, the representative of the House of Medici in Bruges, for the church of the Hospital of Sta Maria Nuova in Florence, and it exercised a strong influence on Italian painters with its masterful handling of the oil technique. There is a great variety of surface ornament and detail, but this is combined with lucid organization of the figure groups and a convincing sense of spatial depth. As remarkable as Hugo's skill in reconciling grandeur of conception with keep observation is his psychological penetration in the depiction of individual figures, notably the awe-struck shepherds. The other works attributed to Hugo include two large panels probably designed as organ shutters (Royal collection, on loan to National Gallery of Scotland). His last work is generally thought to be the
