Main Page Biographical Material Photos List of Works ... Operatic Works Welcome to the Hugo von Hofmannsthal Resource Center. This page was developed as a final project in Barbara Schoenberg's seminar Virgins, Vamps and Veneer: Vienna 1900 (Spring semester, 1997) at Pomona College . One of its purposes is to provide on-line resources to those who are interested in the works of the Austrian writer Hugo von Hofmannsthal. Those who have not studied German literature may not have heard of Hofmannsthal, and even many Gemanists are only familiar with some of his more famous works. However, Hofmannsthal is without a doubt one of the preeminent German-language poets, dramatists, and essayists of this century, and it is worthwhile to take a more in-depth look into the man, his works, and his time. This web-site hopes to provide the casual observer with a broad overview, the student with a look a particular works, and the scholar with secondary resources for further study. Here is a list of the resources you will find on this site:

The Gardener's Daughters
One fills the large Delft jugs,
Painted with blue dragons and birds,
With a loose sheaf of bright flowers:
Among them jasmine, ripe roses unfolding,
Dahlias, carnations and narcissus... Tall daisies, lilac umbels and snowball
Dance above them, and
Stalks, silvery down and panicles sway...
A fragrant bacchanal...
The other with pale thin fingers picks
Long-stemmed rigid orchids,
Two or three for a narrow vase... Rising up with fading colors, With long styles, strange and winding, With purple threads and garish dots, With violet brown panther spots And lurking, seductive chalices Wanting to kill... Die Töchter der Gärtnerin, 1891

49. Four Poems By Hugo Hofmannsthal, Translated By Johannes Beilharz
German originals and English translation by Johannes Beilharz.
http://www.adirondackreview.homestead.com/transhofmannsthal.html
@import url(http://www.homestead.com/~media/elements/Text/font_styles.css); Hugo von Hofmannsthal was born 1874 in Vienna and died 1929 in Rodaun. He was a major Austrian poet, dramatist and essayist on the threshold from the 19th to the 20th century. He gained early literary fame with his poetry and lyrical plays, partially published under the pseudonym of "Loris."  His poems, of exquisite beauty, reflect on appearance and reality, transience and timelessness, continuity and change in human personality constant themes throughout his work. As the result of a crisis documented in his essay " Ein Brief ," he stopped writing poetry before the turn of the century. Among his plays are Everyman (1911) and The Great Salzburg Theater of the World (1922), still regularly performed at the Salzburg festival he co-founded with Max Reinhardt after World War I, and comedies written in Viennese dialect, e.g. The Difficult Man The Incorruptible (1923). Hofmannsthal became internationally famous for his collaboration with Richard Strauss on operas like The Cavalier of the Rose The Woman without a Shadow (1919) and Helen in Egypt

Victor Hugo (1802-1885) Novelist, poet, and dramatist, the most important of French Romantic writers. Victor Hugo developed his own version of the historical novel, combining concrete, historical details with vivid, melodramatic, even feverish imagination. His best-known works include The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1831) and "How came it that this prudent, economical man was also generous? That this chaste adolescent, this model father, grew to be, in his last years, an ageing faun? That this legitimist changed, first into a Bonapartist, only, later still, to be hailed as the grandfather of the Republic? That this pacifist could sing, better than anybody, of the glories of the flags of Wagram? That this bourgeois in the eyes of other bourgeois came to assume the stature of a rebel? These are the questions that every biographer of Victor Hugo must answer." (from Olympio: The Life of Victor Hugo Virgil . At the age of sixteen he noted: "Many a great poet is often / Nothing but a literary giraffe: / How great he seems in front, / How small he is behind!" With his brothers he founded in 1819 a review, the

53. Victor Hugo (1802-1885)
Biography of the French poet, playwright, and novelist.
http://www.imagi-nation.com/moonstruck/clsc90.html
VICTOR HUGO "IN a truly great dramatist the situations spring from the characters, but in Hugo's plays, as in Calderon 's and Corneille 's, the situation dominates the characters." This fault will be found alike in Hugo's first produced play, Cromwell , which appeared when its author was only twenty-five years old, and his two greatest stage successes, Hernani and Ruy Blas . The critic remarks further: "The situation in Hernani is strained and dramatically unreal, the sentiment is mawkish, the oratory grandiloquent; but a throbbing life and intensely expressed emotion maintain the interest, though this is a lyric rather than a dramatic one." The same might be said of Ruy Blas . Yet these two dramas are still played in France and go far toward explaining Hugo's contemporary popularity. Hugo's father was an officer in the French army, and most of his early life was spent in Paris with the exception of a year in Madrid where his father's military duties had taken him. This youthful experience left its imprint both on Hernani and Ruy Blas Hugo's interest in literature began young. In his early teens he was already entering poetical contests and was occasionally successful. At seventeen he founded a fortnightly journal which, however, was short-lived. At nineteen he wrote a play

I was living alone in a very isolated area and I was having insomnia so severe that I was only sleeping one to three hours a night. On top of that, when I did sleep, I had intense nightmares, all on the theme of brutish men viciously killing and/or raping women me for example. The dreams were terrifying, but they were also bewildering; while they could be explained by real-life fears, I felt they were more about me than anything external, and because I very much wanted to understand them, I thought a lot about them. Solitude, sleep deprivation, nightmares and self-examination are a loopy combination, and I spent my many waking hours moving in and out of an half-dream state in which the violent images from my subconscious loomed about me, leering ridiculously as I nodded off in the grocery store checkout line.

58. A FIGHT WITH A CANNON (1927 Ed.) By VICTOR HUGO
Hugo s short story.
http://gaslight.mtroyal.ca/fightcan.htm
The following is a Gaslight etext.... A message to you about
A FIGHT WITH A CANNON
By VICTOR HUGO
THE WORLD'S 100 BEST SHORT STORIES
Volume One: ADVENTURE
New York AND London
originally from the novel Quatre-Vingt Treize (transl. as Ninety-Three
(Book 2, Chapters III-conclusion, IV, V, and VI) La Vieuville was suddenly cut short by a cry of despair, and at the same time a noise was heard wholly unlike any other sound. The cry and sounds came from within the vessel. The captain and lieutenant rushed toward the gun-deck, but could not get down. All the gunners were pouring up in dismay. Something terrible had just happened. One of the carronades of the battery, a twenty-four pounder, had broken loose. This is the most dangerous accident that can possibly take place on shipboard. Nothing more terrible can happen to a sloop of war in open sea and under full sail. A cannon that breaks its moorings suddenly becomes some strange, supernatural beast. It is a machine transformed into a monster. That short mass on wheels moves like a billiard-ball, rolls with the rolling of the ship, plunges with the pitching, goes, comes, stops, seems to meditate, starts on its course again, shoots like an arrow from one end of the vessel to the other, whirls around, slips away, dodges, rears, bangs, crashes, kills, exterminates. It is a battering ram capriciously assaulting a wall. Add to this the fact that the ram is of metal, the wall of wood. It is matter set free; one might say, this eternal slave was avenging itself; it seems as if the total depravity concealed in what we call inanimate things has escaped, and burst forth all of a sudden; it appears to lose patience, and to take a strange mysterious revenge; nothing more relentless than this wrath of the inanimate. This enraged lump leaps like a panther, it has the clumsiness of an elephant, the nimbleness of a mouse, the obstinacy of an ox, the uncertainty of the billows, the zigzag of the lightning, the deafness of the grave. It weighs ten thousand pounds, and it rebounds like a child's ball. It spins and then abruptly darts off at right angles.

60. Hugo Ball (1886-1927)
Biography of the Dadaist writer.
http://www.peak.org/~dadaist/English/Graphics/ball.html
Hugo Ball
Ball protested several times "against the humiliating fact of a world war in the 20th century." In light of this, all static values of culture appeared to him to be questionable. He composed sound-poems, or "verses without words." In 1917 he ceased to take an active part in the DaDa movement. Became co-editor of the newspaper "Freie Zeitung," in Bern, which demanded, editorially, a republic for Germany. Later he retired and went to live in the Ticino, where he was employed on a biography of Bakunin. From his DaDa period an unpublished novel exists, "Tenderenda, der Phantast." In his "Criticism of German Intelligence" (1919), he tried to present a profound analysis of the German state of mind (which may have foreshadowed Hitlerism).
