Alberti, Leon Battista
Leon Battista Alberti was born in 1404 and spent the first 40 years of his life studying Greek and Roman civilizations. Through his research, Alberti gained a reputation as a learned Latin scholar. In the later half of his life, Leon turned towards architecture and painting. He published two books, On Painting and On Architecture , which were very influential. Although Alberti was primarily known as an architect, he is often credited with formulating the first laws of perspective using the first perspective aids in painting.
Brunelleschi, Filippo
Filipio Brunelleschi, a famous Renaissance architect, developed many important construction methods as well as contributing to the evolution of perspective. EYCK, Jan van (b. before 1395, Maaseik, d. 1441, Bruges)
Biography
Jan van Eyck, the most famous and innovative Flemish painter of the 15th century, is thought to have come from the village of Maaseyck in Limbourg. No record of his birthdate survives, but it is believed to have been about 1390; his career, however, is well documented. He was employed (1422-24) at the court of John of Bavaria, count of Holland, at The Hague, and in 1425 he was made court painter and valet de chambre to Duke Philip the Good of Burgundy. He became a close member of the duke's court and undertook several secret missions for him, including a trip (1428-29) to Spain and Portugal in connection with negotiations that resulted in the marriage (1430) of Philip of Burgundy and Isabella of Portugal. Documents show that in 1432-33 van Eyck bought a house in Bruges. He signed and dated a number of paintings between 1432 and 1439, all of which are painted in oil and varnished. According to documents, he was buried on July 9, 1441. Van Eyck has been credited traditionally with the invention of painting in oils, and, although this is incorrect, there is no doubt that he perfected the technique. He used the oil medium to represent a variety of subjects with striking realism in microscopic detail; for example, he infused painted jewels and precious metals with a glowing inner light by means of subtle glazes over the highlights.

Jan van Eyck
Biography
Jan van Eyck is considered to be a founder of the Early Renaissance style in the Northern Renaissance. We do not know the exact date and place of his birth, it is believed that he was born in early 1390s in the eastern province of the Netherlands Limburg. He probably was taught the art by his brother Hubert van Eyck, with whom he created the masterpiece The Ghent Altarpiece (1425-1432), which they started in 1425, but after the death of Hubert, his younger brother finished it alone. JAN VAN EYCK
Portrait of Jan Van Eyck
INTRODUCTION
Jan Van Eyck was one of the most influential people in his time.
BACKGROUND
No one ever knew when Jan was born. They think it must have been around the 1390's. Jan died in 1441 and was buried on July 9, that year.
Jan Van Eyck was Dutch. He was born in the province of Limberg, in the region between the Netherlands and what is now called Belgium.
Jan had an older brother named Hubert Van Eyck, who was also an artist. The brothers often worked together; sometimes Hubert would start a painting and Jan would finish it.
Jan worked for Phillip the Good and the Duke of Borgonga.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Jan Van Eyck completed fifteen paintings in sixty-one years.
Jan Van Eyck's most famous painting was Giovanni Arnolfini and his Bride, (painted in 1434).
The Ghent Altarpiece was started by his brother, Hubert Van Eyck, in 1425 (years before he died), then finished by Jan seven years later.
In The Last Judgement Jan and Hubert had to use their imagination. To them the painting meant "The end of time when the dead rise from their graves and are judged."
Another one of Jan's finest paintings was Man In Red Turban (painted in 1433). The sitter could have been Jan himself because there was a slight strain in the eyes as though he were looking into a mirror.

The Wedding: An Encounter with Jan van Eyck (Art Encounters) List Price: Price: You Save:
Description
Is the bride pregnant? Why does the groom look so old? What’s reflected in the mirror? The Arnolfini Wedding is surely the most hotly debated painting of the Northern Renaissance—and one of the most beloved. In this historical novel, E.M. Rees weaves a rich story of love and honor that answers the questions about this great picture. At her first visit to the Duke’s court, young Giovanna Cenami falls in love with a mysterious stranger employed by the famous Flemish painter Jan van Eyck. But Giovanna’s romantic dreams are shattered when her father tells her she must marry a rich merchant to save them all from financial ruin. When she decides to pursue her own dreams, defying her family, she finds herself in grave danger of losing her reputation, her honor—and perhaps her life.
