He couldn't afford a model and painted often himself Gogh, Vincent Willem van Dutch Post-Impressionist painter, whose work represents the archetype of Expressionism, or emotional spontaneity in painting.
In 1886 van Gogh went to Paris to live with his brother Théo van Gogh, an art dealer, and became familiar with the new art movements developing at the time.
Influenced by the work of the Impressionists and by the work of such Japanese printmakers as Hiroshige and Hokusai, van Gogh began to experiment with current techniques. Subsequently, he adopted the brilliant hues found in the paintings of Camille Pissarro and Georges Seurat. In 1888 van Gogh left Paris for southern France, where, under the burning sun of Province, he painted scenes of the fields, cypress trees, peasants, and rustic life characteristic of the region.
For a time he was in a hospital at Arles. He then spent a year in the nearby asylum of Saint-Rémy, working between repeated spells of madness. He shot himself on July 27, 1890, and died two days later.

Biography
Dutch artist, a legend for his brilliant work, lived his brief life in misery and poverty. Disappointed in love and religion, he was intense, difficult and unhappy. He seemed to lack a psychological shield to protect him from the pain of everything, every moment. Washed out as a preacher to impoverished coal miners, van Gogh turned to full time art when he was 27. In 1886 he went to Paris to immerse himself in the vanguard styles of the day. He began using the impressionist's choppy brush strokes of pastel color. Within two years, he was disillusioned by what he saw in the Parisian scene, and living with his brother Theodorus, upon whom he was financially dependent. proved to be a strain for both of them. He fled south to Arles. Intoxicated by the countryside, he painted with thicker impasto in blazing yellows, piercing reds and icy greens. His work still did not make him happy; in fact, he was frequently in despair. When his friend, Paul Gauquin, arrived in Arles on 10/20/1888, Van Gogh welcomed him. However, they began to quarrel, drink absinthe, a potent alcohol, and partake in debauchery. When Gauquin left Arles on the morning of 12/25/1888, Vincent followed him with a razor, and then locked himself in his room and cut off the lobe of his left ear.

  • Vincent van Gogh (Dutch, 1853-1890). The Starry Night, 1889. Oil on canvas. 29 x 36 1/4 in. (73.7 x 92.1 cm). Acquired through the Lillie P. Bliss Bequest. zSB(3,3) We've all heard this sad story. Vincent van Gogh lived a short, deeply tormented life, throughout which he sought (in vain) his place in the world. He died, by his own hand, feeling his life was a miserable failure. Unbeknownst to Vincent, the work he did pioneered the Expressionistic style and, 150 years after his birth, his name would be world famous. Movement, Style, School or Period: Post-impressionism > Expressionism Date and Place of Birth: March 30, 1853, Groot-Zundert, Netherlands Early Life: Vincent was the son of a Dutch Protestant minister, and grew up believing that his calling, too, lay in serving his fellow man. Unfortunately, his nature was such that anything he attempted was doomed to failure. He wasn't inattentive to career moves but, rather, threw himself into endeavors with such ferocity that he quickly exhausted his body, followed by his mind. By the time he was 27, van Gogh had been a theology student, a semi-trained evangelist in the slums of London and the mines of Wasmes (in Belgium), a French tutor, an unsuccessful art salesman and spurned by love.
