In 1869, he got a position at the art dealers, Goupil and Co. in The Hague, through his uncle, and worked with them until he was dismissed from the London office in 1873. He worked as a schoolmaster in England (1876), before training for the ministry at Amsterdam University (1877). After he failed to get a post in the Church, he went to live as an independent missionary among the Borinage miners. "He was largely self-taught as an artist, although he received help from his cousin, Mauve. His first works were heavily painted, mud-colored and clumsy attempts to represent the life of the poor (e.g. Potato-Eaters , 1885, Amsterdam), influenced by one of his artistic heroes, Millet . He moved to Paris in 1886, living with his devoted brother, Theo, who as a dealer introduced him to artists like

48. Van Gogh: Genius Ignored
Van Gogh was an indisputable genius and utterly ignored. He created hundreds of bold, brilliant paintings; only one was sold during his lifetime.
http://www.serve.com/Lucius/VanGogh.index.html
Genius Ignored , Chapter 7: Van Gogh [Summary: Van Gogh was an indisputable genius, utterly, indisputably ignored. He created hundreds of bold, brilliant paintings; only one was sold during his lifetime.] It's entirely possible that if Van Gogh had never lived this book would never have been written. Not that these other artists wouldn't have been just as great and just as ignored, but the concept might have been kind of fuzzy. Van Gogh brings it into focus: an indisputable genius, utterly, indisputably ignored. No repetition inures us; we are freshly shocked and amazed. After having failed as an art dealer and a Protestant evangelist, Van Gogh decided at the age of 27 to become an artist. He received a smattering of formal education, but mostly, with singular feverishness and dedication, studied and practiced on his own. In his 33rd year he moved to Paris, blossoming into a brilliant colorist. Two years later he moved south to Arles, producing bold, bright paintings and drawings at a miraculous rate. He started suffering bouts of insanity. He moved north to Auvers, near Paris, continuing to paint wonderfully. He killed himself at the age of 37. He and his brother Theo who had supported him financially and emotionally throughout his career had been able to sell only one painting while he was still alive. "Van Gogh's Van Goghs", at the National Gallery of Art, Washington.
By Patricia Boccadoro
AUVERS-SUR-OISE, 12 November 1998
- After the superb comparative show of Millet/Van Gogh in Paris , where the Dutchman's most beautiful rural scenes, including the sublime " La Siesta " were exhibited, it is now Washington's turn to enjoy some of the works of the most important pioneer of nineteenth century art, precursor of the Fauvist and Expressionist movements.
The Washington exhibition (until 3 January 1999 and accessible on a queueing basis only ), a retrospective of the painter's life, includes seventy-two paintings on loan from the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam, currently closed for renovation. While these paintings, donated by the Van Gogh family, constitute the largest survey of the artist's career outside the Netherlands for many years, it is unfortunately not the best.
I have been privileged to visit the Van Gogh museum many times to see the rich collection of early masterpieces (one can only hope that the "renovation" includes improving the lighting system and presentation of such works), but have always left with the frustration the Foundation must feel in possessing so few pictures from the most glorious and productive period in the painter's life at Auvers-sur-Oise.

Van Gogh's Bedroom The Main View
Most people who are familiar with Van Gogh's work, will at once recognise the above picture. This was a scene that he painted several times, each one being slightly different to the other. My version is different again in that it is a rendered view taken from a 3d model of the entire room. This project was completed about nine years ago and took me about six weeks. I used an Acorn A3000 computer and a lovely piece of software titled 'Illusionist' from Clares Micro supplies to complete the task. Only 256 colours are supported by this software but the results were and still are quite stunning. I say 'are' because this software will run on the newer Acorn machines as well. The idea behind this project was to render the view at the unseen end of the room. i.e. the position that Van Gogh painted the scene from. This was loosely based on fact but nevertheless, makes the end result very believable.
