Amazon.com With precisely 35 canvases to his credit, the Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer represents one of the great enigmas of 17th-century art. The meager facts of his biography have been gleaned from a handful of legal documents. Yet Vermeer's extraordinary paintings of domestic life, with their subtle play of light and texture, have come to define the Dutch golden age. His portrait of the anonymous Girl with a Pearl Earring has exerted a particular fascination for centuriesand it is this magnetic painting that lies at the heart of Tracy Chevalier's second novel of the same title. Girl with a Pearl Earring centers on Vermeer's prosperous Delft household during the 1660s. When Griet, the novel's quietly perceptive heroine, is hired as a servant, turmoil follows. First, the 16-year-old narrator becomes increasingly intimate with her master. Then Vermeer employs her as his assistantand ultimately has Griet sit for him as a model. Chevalier vividly evokes the complex domestic tensions of the household, ruled over by the painter's jealous, eternally pregnant wife and his taciturn mother-in-law. At times the relationship between servant and master seems a little anachronistic. Still, Girl with a Pearl Earring does contain a final delicious twist.

Vermeer was a moderately successful provincial genre painter in his lifetime. He seems never to have been particularly wealthy, leaving his wife and children in debt at his death, perhaps because he produced relatively few paintings. Vermeer worked slowly and with great care, using bright colours and sometimes expensive pigments , with a preference for cornflower blue and yellow. He is particularly renowned for his masterly treatment and use of light in his work.

    with Tracy,
Susan Vreeland Little is known about Vermeer. For a start, we don't know what he looked like. There are no confirmed images of him, though in one of his early works, The Procuress , a man looks out at the viewer from the edge of the scene, which in Dutch painting of the time was often the artist himself. In The Art of Painting a painter sits with his back to us. We don't know if it's meant to be Vermeer, but it gives us an idea of what an artist in his studio might have looked like. The few known facts about Vermeer's life come from legal documents , of marriages and births and sales and debts. The son of innkeepers, he was born in 1632 in Delft, a town of about 25,000 people best known for its blue and white glazed earthenware. He spent all of his life there, though he may have done a six-year painting apprenticeship elsewhere, possibly in Amsterdam or Utrecht. In 1653 Vermeer converted to Catholicism and married Catharina Bolnes, a Catholic from a well-off bourgeois family. They had eleven surviving children. The family lived in the house of Maria Thins, Vermeer's mother-in-law, in an area off the main Market Square known as Papists' Corner because of the concentration of Catholics living there. Only 20% of the population were Catholic; the rest were Protestant. Catholics were tolerated but barred from municipal functions and required to worship privately. There were two "hidden" churches in Delft, one right next door to Maria Thins' house.

Lucius Furius view on Vermeer and how he was almost forgotten after his death.
    http://www.serve.com/Lucius/Vermeer.index.html
Genius Ignored , Chapter 3: Vermeer [Summary: Vermeer was modestly successful as a painter/art dealer in Delft. After his death he was forgotten almost entirely.] Rembrandt was underestimated; his contemporary Jan Vermeer of Delft was completely ignored. Vermeer was modestly successful as a painter/art dealer, well-respected in Delft, but never gained much of a reputation outside. After his death, he was forgotten almost entirely. In the nineteenth century he was "rediscovered" and since the beginning of the twentieth has been considered one of the finest painters ever. Link back to Genius Ignored Table of Contents Johannes van der Meer was born on October 31, 1632. (In adulthood he shortened his last name to "Vermeer", apparently to avoid confusion with numerous other "Jan van der Meer"s.) In 1653 he married Catharina Bolnes. He was received into the local Guild of St. Luke (the artists' guild) that same year and by the age of 24 was an accomplished painter: "The Procuress" (Fig. V1), one of only three of his paintings with a date, is from the year 1656. Almost all his paintings have interesting arrangements of figures and objects the large, dark back of the soldier and the bright expression of the girl in "The Soldier and the Laughing Girl", for instance. The paintings I love the most, however, are those in which the humans are most central.

Jump to: navigation search Previous (Johannes Tinctoris) Next (Johannes de Garlandia) Girl with a Pearl Earring, known as the "Mona Lisa of the North" Johannes Vermeer or Jan Vermeer (baptized October 31, 1632, died December 15, 1675) was a Dutch painter who specialized in scenes of ordinary people going about their everyday life. Using minute details he conveys subtle symbolic and allegoric themes that draw the viewer into the same state of deep contemplation that the figure(s) in his paintings convey. He was also a master at depicting the way light illuminates objects. Virtually forgotten for nearly two hundred years, the art critic W. Thore-Burger resurrected interest in Vermeer in 1866 when he published an essay attributing 66 pictures to him (only 35 paintings are definitively attributed to him today). Even in his lifetime he was relatively unknown outside of his hometown of Delft where all of his works were painted. Now he has become one of the most admired artists of the Golden Age of Dutch Art. In recent years a resurgence of appreciation for Vermeer's work can be seen in popular culture. His painting

    THE LOVE LETTER
    Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam
Vermeer loved to grasp the private moment. Here a woman is presented a love note by her maid. She glances up with a look of apprehension and the maid reassuringly gazes back down upon her. The woman has obviously been consoling herself with her instrument (remember Achilles) and with the picture in the background, Vermeer hints that her love is at sea. He has added to the sense of our intrusion by placing the viewer in a closet (the curtain briefly drawn back) to view this most confidential moment.
    THE ALLEGORY OF PAINTING
    Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna
The back of the painter's head is easily recognized as that of Albrecht Durer, and the easel he paints upon resembles the "A" in Durer's signature. The model is Clio, the muse of history (the volume under her arm is from the historian, Thucydides) and the map on the wall displays the wonders of the Netherlands. Durer, much influenced by the Protestantism of Martin Luther, loved the God of history and creation. This combination of elements invokes a theme that is so inviting for Vermeer that he has graciously pulled back the curtain and provided us with a chair that we, too, might sit and admire this great artist lovingly going about his craft.

October 31, 1632, Delft, Netherlands This was, at least, the date on which Vermeer was baptized. There is no record of his actual date of birth, though we assume it was close to the above. Vermeer's parents were Protestant Reformed, a Calvinist denomination that held infant baptism as a sacrament. (Vermeer himself is thought to have converted to Roman Catholicism when he married.)

    Johannes Vermeer, Delft 1632 - Delft 1675
On October 31, 1632, Jan, the son of Reynier and Digna Vermeer, was baptized in New Church in Delft. In 1641, Reynier Jansz bought the "Mechelen" house with an adjoining inn on the Grote Markt square in Delft. His father, a weaver and inn keeper, was enrolled in the Guild of Saint Luke as Mr. Constvercoper (master merchant of artworks). Jan Vermeer would see his first paintings in his father's establishment. On April 23, 1653, the civil marriage of Jan Vermeer and Catharina Bolnes was celebrated in the Delft city hall; she was from Gouda and five years his senior. They would have 15 children, 4 of whom died at a young age. On December 29, 1653, Vermeer enrolled as a master painter in the Guild of Saint Luke in Delft. In 1662, Vermeer was elected the Guild's president. On December 16, 1675, Jan Vermeer, a painter by trade, forty-three years old, was entombed in Old Church in Delft.
These are the only three documents which have survived: his birth, his marriage and his death certificates. Some stories about his family, inheritance, debts and that is all. This man's masters, models and companions are unknown to us. We do not have a single handwritten line or a self-portrait. Vermeer is not part of art history and has become a ghost which we can only glimpse fleetingly and guess at through the work he left us.

Johannes Vermeer is one of the best known artists from the Dutch Golden Age. His name is inextricably linked with Delft, the city in which he was born in 1632 and where he lived and worked all his life. The Vermeer Centre offers a visual voyage of discovery through the life, work and city of Johannes Vermeer. Step into 17th century Delft, see samples from Vermeer's oeuvre, go in search of his mentor and find the stories behind the paintings. In the studio, you will see how Vermeer approached his work and how he mastered the light, composition and colour in his paintings. The Vermeer Centre is housed on the historic site of the former St. Lucas Guild, where Vermeer was Dean of the painters for many years. Exhibition "Love messages from Vermeer" In many of Vermeers paintings, objects or specific details referring to "love" are hidden. In a new exhibition on the 2nd floor of the Vermeer Centre these symbolic messages are explained. More information is shown under "Now at the Vermeercentrum".

by Jonathan Janson click here for books about the technique of Vermeer and the Great Masters O f all the old masters' painting techniques, glazing is perhaps the most discussed but the least understood. Completely abandoned in the twentieth-century, it was once one of the most valuable tools possessed by painters. In recent years glazing has been called upon by art historians and painters alike to explain every nuance of past masterpieces assuming an almost mystical character.
    Glazing a Red Satin Dress
    step one
Vermeer first crafted the so-called underpainting , modeling forms and creating light effects with shades of opaque vermilion and flake white. Vermilion was the only strong red opaque pigment available, it had an orange over tone. A small amount of bone black was added in the darker shadows. This layer was allowed to dry completely
    step two
Over the underpainting Vermeer applied one or two very thin layers of madder lake, a deep ruby red, which is transparent by nature.
