Jehan Georges Vibert From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Jehan Georges Vibert (30 September 1840 - 28 July 1902) was a French academic painter Contents Biography References External links Gallery ... edit Biography Vibert was born September 30, 1840 in Paris. He began his artistic training at a young age under the instruction of his maternal grandfather, engraver Jean-Pierre-Marie Jazet. He was more interested in painting than engraving and entered the studio of Félix-Joseph Barrias and eventually the École des Beaux-Arts when he was sixteen. He remained at the École for six years under the instruction of historic painter François-Edouard Picot Vibert debuted at the Salon of 1863 with La Sieste (The Siesta) and Repentir (Repentance). During the Franco-Prussian War , Vibert became a sharpshooter and was wounded at the battle of Malmaison in October 1870. He was awarded the Légion d’Honneur and became a Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur in recognition of his sacrifice. He became an Officer of the Légion d’Honneur in 1882. Vibert submitted work to the Salon until 1899. The popularity of his works spread gained him fame in America and fetched high prices including commissions from

Contact Jehan Georges Vibert PAINTINGS and Biography Jehan Georges Vibert Early Vibert paintings are indebted to the subjects and style of Picot. After his debut at the 1863 Salon, Vibert won a medal at the 1864 Salon for Narcissus Transformed into a Flower (Musée des Beaux-Arts, Bordeaux), despite the scandal caused by the nudity depicted.1 Another mythological painting, Daphne and Chloe (Chrysler Museum, Norfolk, Va.), was harshly criticized at the 1866 Salon; one reviewer counseled the artist "to return to the study of nature, take on a live model."2 Meanwhile, the genre painting Entrance of the Toreros (private collection) he had submitted to the same Salon enjoyed a positive response. Vibert realized that he would achieve greater financial and popular success with smaller genre paintings than with larger mythological and historical paintings. Possessed of a cynical wit and great technical ability, Vibert produced numerous anecdotal paintings that satirized the Catholic Church. Never completely abandoning his aspirations to the "higher" genres, Vibert showed an ambitious allegorical painting, the monumental Apotheosis of Adolphe Thiers (Musée d’Orsay, Paris), at the 1878 Salon, but the painting, too, elicited extremely negative responses, though it was bought by the state.
