John Atkinson Grimshaw Spartacus USA History British History Second World War ... Email John Atkinson Grimshaw was born in Leeds in 1836. His father was a policeman but in 1848 he found work with the Great Northern Railway Company . Grimshaw's parents were strict Baptists and his mother strongly disapproved of his interest in painting and on one occasion she destroyed all his paints. In 1852 Grimshaw became a clerk at the Great Northern Railway office in Leeds . The city had several art galleries and Grimshaw was able to see the work of Holman Hunt The Light of the World Henry Wallis Death of Chatterton and William Powell Frith Derby Day Grimshaw decided to become a full-time painter and in 1861 he left his job with the Great Northern Railway . Grimshaw's paintings were sold in two art galleries, smaller picture dealers and a couple of bookshops in Leeds. One of his main customers was Thomas Fenteman, who owned an antiquarian booksellers. Fenteman was a deeply religious man and would only buy the pictures after Grimshaw had confirmed that they had not been painted on a Sunday.

Wallis, who made the supreme sacrifice for his country on the battlefields of Europe, arrived here from France Friday noon. Funeral services were conducted from the Opera House Monday, Aug. 8, 1921 at 2:30 p.m. under the auspices of the Henry D. Wallis Post, American Legion, in whose honor the post had been named. He was the first young man from this city to lose his life in the great conflict. Burial was made with due military honors in the Greenwood Cemetery, Rev. Bickell officiating. Henry Wallis was born in this city (Greenwood, Clark County, Wis.) Aug. 8, 1895 and died Aug. 5, 1918. His boyhood and practically his whole life was spent here. He leaves to mourn his loss his father, grandfather, two half-brothers, one sister, four half-sisters and a host of other relatives and friends. His many friends unite in extending sympathy to the family in this sad hour of his homecoming. is dedicated to the free sharing of information by researchers, local historians, genealogists and educators. Henry Wallis From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Redirected from Wallis, Henry Jump to: navigation search The Death of Chatterton, 1856 Henry Wallis (1830 - 1916) was an English Pre-Raphaelite painter writer and collector Born in London on 21 February 1830, his father's name and occupation are unknown. When in 1845 his mother, Mary Anne Thomas, married Andrew Wallis, a prosperous London architect, Henry took his stepfather's surname. His artistic training was thorough and influential. He was admitted as a probationer to the RA and enrolled in the Painting School in March 1848. He also studied in Paris at Marc-Charles-Gabriel Gleyre 's atelier and at the Academie des Beaux Arts , sometime between 1849 and 1853. A painting by Wallis depicting Gerard Johnson carving Shakespeare's funerary monument Ben Jonson shows Shakespeare's death mask to the sculptor Wallis is best remembered for his first great success, the painting titled Death of Chatterton , which he exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1856. The painting depicted the impoverished late 18th-century poet Thomas Chatterton , who poisoned himself in despair at the age of seventeen, and was considered a romantic hero for many young and struggling artists in Wallis's day.
