Interesting Questions, Facts, and Information
    Warhol, Andy
Which feminist shot Andy Warhol in 1968? Andy Warhol

Valerie Solanas . Valerie Solanas was an ardent feminist. She was one of the many who felt that Warhol was abusive and controlling (and she wasn't wrong there). She thought that he deserved to die. Warhol was at one point pronounced dead, but was revived and slowly recovered. Some called him a martyr, and others felt that he got what he deserved. He recovered and lived till 1987.
To speed up the process of creating art, what method did Warhol famously adopt? Andy Warhol

Silk screen printing . His 1973 portrait of Mao is one of the best known examples of his use of this process.
Warhol was the producer of the first album of what underground rock band? Andy Warhol

The Velvet Underground . He also painted the cover to their first album, entitled 'The Velvet Underground and Nico.' Many of the songs were considered daring, shocking or even a shade kinky.

Warhol, Andy
Back to Artists About Andy Warhol Andy Warhol, whose name is synonymous with Pop Art, was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and grew up in McKeesport, Pennsylvania. He studied art at the Carnegie Institute of Technology from 1945 to 1949 and then went to New York City where he became an illustrator until 1960 when he began making paintings based on comic strip characters such as Popeye, Dick Tracy, and Superman.
He turned from the prevailing abstract-expressionist styles and the emphasis on the artist's emotion to a hard-line realism, using many common images associated with the popular media such as a Campbell Soup can or a Coca-Cola bottle or Brillo pad. The first images were handpainted, but many were reproduced with a silk-screen process. He became the "first artist to utlize the screenprint medium to elevate both common and famous photographic images from popular culture to fine art status." (Falk Vol III, p. 3465)

About Face: Andy Warhol Portraits

17; Female Movie Star Composite c.1962. cat. 11; Self-Portrait 1980. Polaroid photograph. cat. 50; Self-Portrait 1981-82. Polaroid photograph. cat. 55.]

Artist and Filmmaker, 1928 - 1987 Andy Warhol (Andrew Warhola) was born on August 6, 1928 in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. He is considered by many as the most influential American artist of the second half of the 20th century. Warhol's signature style used commercial silkscreening techniques to create identical, mass produced images on canvas, then variations in color to give each print of an edition a different look.
Warhol first applied his silkscreen techniques as a commercial artist in the 1950s. Window displays of a Fifth Avenue department store featured his comicbook superhero images. His initial forays into the POP ART came in the early 1960s with his

Andy Warhol is one of the most famous and popular artists of the last century and from November 10, 2001 — March 3, 2002 some of his less well-known works will be on display at UCR/California Museum of Photography. Queer(ing) Warhol: Andy Warhol’s (Self-) Portraits looks at photographs of Andy Warhol along with his self-portraits as documents of Warhol’s conscious performance of a queer identity. Warhol’s influence on contemporary artists and on contemporary perceptions of art is vast. He dealt with issues of photographic truth, consumer culture, and media spectacle years before the age digital imaging and reality TV. By presenting himself in a range of drag costumes Warhol morphs his identity before the camera. The strategies presented in this exhibition of portraits of and by Warhol provide a new perspective on his entire oeuvre. In his best known works Warhol manipulates the power of appearance and representation making Campbell soup cans and Marilyn Monroe faces icons instead of literal representations.
