Biography:

Born in Pennsylvania, Andrew Newel Wyeth studied under his father, book illustrator Newel Convers Wyeth. After his father’s death in 1945, he began to paint watercolor and tempera landscapes and mixed his own pigments to create his distinctive subdued palette. He also was interested in painting the rural life in his home state, Pennsylvania, and in Maine. His portraits of these people are almost photographic in their degree of realism.

Andrew Wyeth
Andrew Newell Wyeth was born in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, on July 12, 1917, a son of the internationally renowned painter and illustrator N.C. Wyeth and his wife Carolyn Bockius Wyeth. Theirs was a creative family: Henriette Wyeth Hurd, Carolyn Wyeth and Andrew were painters; Ann Wyeth McCoy was a composer; and son Nathaniel was an engineer and inventor with many patents to his credit. At age 15, Wyeth began his artistic training in his father's studio. In that year, on one of his boyhood walks, he discovered the Chadds Ford farm of Karl and Anna Kuerner. Wyeth was intrigued by Kuerner, a German immigrant and World War I veteran, developing a close relationship with him over the years. Wyeth has found subjects in the Kuerner farm's people, animals, buildings and landscapes for hundreds of works of art over more than 75 years. The Wyeth family spent summer months in Maine, and Andrew Wyeth's early watercolor landscapes, much influenced by the work of Winslow Homer met with enormous critical acclaim at his first one-man show at the William Macbeth Gallery in New York City in 1937. An exceedingly self-critical artist, this immediate success did not reassure him. Feeling that his work was too facile, he returned to his father's studio for further concentration on technique.

Book Review What a privilege it is to stroll through thousands of years of magnificent art with the keen-eyed, confident, supremely knowledgeable Thomas Hoving, the former director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, whose opinionated, charming prose could make anyone feel like an art-world insider. Whether or not you know an ism from an altarpiece, Hoving will gently grasp your elbow and welcome you to the party, introducing you to everyone who's anyone and encouraging you to partake of the nourishing, sumptuous feast. Like most of the books in the For Dummies series, this one isn't, really. It's a delightful, erudite romp, cleverly and clearly designed to allow the art-curious reader to correct for a nearly universal deficit in American education. There are pictures, of course, including some in color, but this book assumes real love... Andrew Wyeth Richard Meryman May 1998 Paperback Book Review Andrew Wyeth's achievement is unmatched by other modern American realist painters: he produced canvasses that became American icons, deepening our sense of the possibilities of representational painting in an abstract age. This biography, produced by family friend Richard Meryman, who first wrote about Wyeth for

Wyeth, the youngest son of noted illustrator N.C. Wyeth (1882-1945), grew up in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania and on the coast of Maine, and began painting at an early age. He had his first one-man show in New York in 1937 and has had a successful painting career ever since. A realist who paints portraits and scenes of Americana in water color and egg tempera, Wyeth became one of the nation's most popular and celebrated artists by the 1970s. Though Wyeth shuns public attention, he made headlines in 1986 with the revelation that he'd secretly done nearly 250 paintings (1971-85) of a family acquaintance, Helga Testorf ( The Helga Pictures ). His many paintings include
