This is the home page of The Astronomer group, TA for short. We produce a magazine for the advanced amateur and our aim is to publish all observations of astronomical interest as soon as possible after they are made. The magazine has been published monthly since 1964 and subscribers are found all over the world. Back issues of magazines dating back to 1977 are available. We also provide a very comprehensive electronic circulars service to keep our members up to date. All of this is available for a modest subscription Submitting images: When submitting images to TA please send them as an e-mail attachment and please try to use the following filename format: object_yyyymmdd_hhmm_observer.jpg

Welcome to HM Nautical Almanac Office
Introduction
HM Nautical Almanac Office (HMNAO) is now part of the UK Hydrographic Office based at Taunton in Somerset. These web pages describe the publications and services of HM Nautical Almanac Office. A description of the type of work we carry out and the history of the office is also available. The Office produces astronomical data suitable for a wide range of users, including professional and amateur astronomers, mariners, aviators, surveyors, the Armed Forces, the Police, lawyers, religious groups, architects, schools, diary and calendar manufacturers, photographers and film crews. In fact, anyone requiring astronomical information may require our services. HMNAO is jointly responsible for producing the annual volumes of The Astronomical Almanac The Nautical Almanac and Astronomical Phenomena in collaboration with our colleagues at the US Nautical Almanac Office within the Astronomical Applications Department of the US Naval Observatory . HMNAO also produces The Star Almanac NavPac and Compact Data The UK Air Almanac Rapid Sight Reduction Tables for Navigation and Planetary and Lunar Coordinates in the United Kingdom.

Astronomical Markup Language [January 30, 2001] "AML, 'Astronomical Markup Language', is an XML language, aimed at being a standard exchange format for metadata in astronomy. AML now supports the following objects (in the object-oriented sense): astronomical object, article, table, set of tables, image, person, and project. This means that all these objects can be described with the same language, allowing easier establishing of links between them, and the creation of programs handling all these objects with the same user interface." See also the related "Astronomical Instrument Markup Language" - "a first implementation of the more general Instrument Markup Language (IML). Both AIML and IML are vocabularies based on the W3C standard, the Extensible Markup Language (XML)." References:

Capital of Ptolemaic Egypt Occupation Epic poet, librarian, scholar, inventor Eratosthenes of Cyrene /eratostʰénɛːs/ /ɛrəˈtɒsθəniːz/ ; c. 276 BC – c. 195 BC ) was a Greek mathematician , elegiac poet athlete geographer astronomer , and music theorist. He was the first person to use the word "geography" and invented the discipline of geography as we understand it. He invented a system of latitude and longitude He was the first person to calculate the circumference of the earth by using a measuring system using stades, or the length of stadiums during that time period (with remarkable accuracy). He was the first person to prove that the Earth was round. He was the first to calculate the tilt of the Earth's axis (also with remarkable accuracy). He may also have accurately calculated the distance from the earth to the sun and invented the leap day He also created a map of the world based on the available geographical knowledge of the era. In addition, Eratosthenes was the founder of scientific chronology; he endeavored to fix the dates of the chief literary and political events from the conquest of
