Astronomy Education
To live and work under the sky of Hawaii is an extraordinary privilege. The Institute for Astronomy's unmatched access to the telescopes and instruments on Manua Kea and Haleakala represents a unique resource for education as well as research. We thus have an opportunity and a responsibility to advance the future of our subject by training world-class astronomers, and by sharing our knowledge with anyone interested in astronomy. The Astronomy Program at the University of Hawaii at Manoa was founded in 1972. Officially, it is part of the , currently chaired by physics Professor Pui Lam. In practice, the astronomy program operates independently of the physics program and is based at the Institute for Astronomy (IfA), a few blocks north of the UH-Manoa campus. The current chair of the astronomy graduate program, Dr. David Sanders, also oversees undergraduate astronomy courses at UH-Manoa.

Astronomy Education is Easier and More Effective with a Planetarium
Students generally exhibit a high level of interest in space related topics, yet teaching astronomy can be a challenge due to its abstract nature. A planetarium allows astronomical concepts to be demonstrated in a three dimensional environment that significantly aids spatial understanding. The planetarium setting is not only educationally effective but also awe-inspiring, increasing student enjoyment of and interest in science. Think of the possibilities of having your own easy to use planetarium at your disposal. No more headaches organizing a field trip to an off site planetarium. Use your projection system as often as you need to cover your subject matter fully, and tailor your lessons to your students' interests and questions. A Digitarium planetarium system is far more powerful than pinhole portable planetariums such as a StarLab. Think of the power of a computer versus a slide projector. For example, Digitarium systems allow you to:
  • Label and zoom in on any object in the sky for easy identification.

    Abstract
I present some of the unique opportunities for conveying the results of astronomical research through partnerships between science museums and universities. I use examples from my own work in cosmology research and education, as well as other sample programs at the Adler Planetarium. Additionally, I compare and contrast this educational medium with other forums for astronomy education. Finally, I demonstrate how research and education can enhance each other synergistically when conducted as a coherent, integrated program.
Unique opportunities of a museum-university partnership The greatest benefit for me is the informal nature of the programs.
    • People are there because they want to be; no grades in classes Wide variety of visitors, from the schools, the city and the world Wide range of activities available for researchers depending on skills and interest Scientists benefit from other specialists at the museum, including professional educators; don't have to reinvent the wheel Museums benefit from researchers' expert knowledge and contacts Feedback: pre and post evaluations by professional staff

Sample Adler Programs Adler astronomers are involved in the content and development of a wide range programs.

Astronomy Education: Current Developments and Trends

abstract The publication in 1983 of "A Nation at Risk" focused attention on the problems of science and mathematics education within the United States. Concerns about astronomy have arisen as part of the general uproar, but astronomy is not yet a major consideration for most educators. In 1994-5 there were 84,715 public schools with a total of 44.1 million students in the US. Their curriculum is most often set through local rules by each of 14,400 districts. (An additional 4.8 million students attended 26,000 private schools.) The emergence of national standards (most notably through Project 2061's Benchmarks and the National Science Education Standards) holds out the promise of astronomy for all students. This paper will examine the role of astronomy within the national standards and how several national astronomy education projects are committed to providing more access to astronomy within the school setting.
Text : For the almost 50 million school children in the US, there are tens of thousands of mostly independent decision-making entities that affect the structure and curriculum for science education. In addition to this diversity of views and lack of structure, there are other problems facing the teaching of science. Although 8% of the gross national product is spent on education, many teachers may be lacking the resources to do so well.

    Astronomy Education Services
Astronomy Education Services (AES) is a Western Australian company dedicated to delivering a professional, up to date and entertaining public outreach and education service in the science of Astronomy. AES is owned and operated by Richard Tonello whose experience covers over 14 years in astronomy, six of which was working for the Perth Observatory, heading their Public Outreach and Education programs. Richard also conducts a number of astronomy courses with UWA Extensions throughout the year as well as operating an astronomy based tour venture during the school holidays at various centres in Western Australia. Richard is also an accomplished Astro-photographer. Recently his works travelled the state during the International Year of Astronomy 2009 as a part of the Perth Observatory's IYA 2009 activities. The exhibition, entitled Celestia Photographica , is a collection of astrophotographic images taken by Richard as well as contributing astrophotographers Vic and Ben Levis. These works combine the use of both old and new technologies (traditional film, digital processing, CCD and Narrow-Band imaging) to showcase a small, yet amazing display of some of the finest objects found in our galaxy and beyond. AES not only caters for schools, but other organizations too, such as:

Research activities of the Physics and Astronomy Education Group
Physics and Astronomy Education Research (PAER) is devoted to studying how students learn and searching for ways to help them learn better. Recognizing the special difficulties that learning physics entails requires a great depth of subject knowledge, so much of this research can be done only by physicists in physics departments. The Rutgers' PAER group, consisting of a number of physicists in the department together with members of the graduate programs in Education and Math, are investigating more effective cognitive approaches, with emphasis on investigation, evaluation, representation, and linguistic issues. We are also doing work on technological innovation in physics teaching. The group has also long been involved in developing innovative teaching environments. This has included Keller-type self-paced courses, minilabs, a hands-on Physics Learning Center, and the use of student response systems, Our group founded the Extended Physics programs for engineering and science majors. These courses have had nearly two decades of success helping underrepresented groups succeed in the science and engineering programs. We continue to develop methods conducive to enhancing the the degree completion rate of women and underrepresented minorities.
