41. EAAE - EUROPEAN ASSOCIATION FOR ASTRONOMY EDUCATION
Improves and promotes astronomical education at all levels in all institutions involved in teaching astronomy in Europe. Contains membership information, the group s history, news, newsletters and projects.
http://www.eaae-astro.org/
The purpose of EAAE is to improve and promote astronomical education at all levels in all institutions involved in teaching astronomy in Europe. Aims and Means Astronomy is the oldest of all sciences. It is also pluridisciplinar; not only do its most recent developments use all the disciplines of physics, but it also has links with chemistry, biology and the Earth sciences. Furthermore, the cultural and philosophical role of Astronomy is undisputed. Studying the Universe is a means of searching for our own origins, learning to situate ourselves within cosmic infinity and developing a sense for the beauty and fragility of our Earth. It equally allows us to keep a critical approach towards irrational pseudo-sciences. Furthermore, Astronomy is extremely popular. There is a great public interest for topics such as eclipses, meteor showers, space missions, and for all the popular magazines and TV programs about astronomy. Several "test" projects within schools have shown that Astronomy is the perfect way to arouse the enthusiasm and interest of all pupils, who tend to be bored with more classical subject matters. Our aim is to develop and to promote the teaching of Astronomy in the broadest way possible. Thanks to its pluri-disciplinary nature, Astronomy can blend in harmoniously with classical experimental sciences, philosophy, history, geography etc.

Graduate Students pursue a Ph.D. in physics with a principal research focus on science education. Students whose primary research is in other areas may pursue a minor in science education. Members in this group have extensive expertise in: improving learning in large lecture courses; research driven curriculum development; WWW-based instructional strategies; K-12 teacher education and authentic student assessment strategies and project evaluation. Working in this group prepares students for continuing research in the growing number of physics education groups across the country, teaching at two and four year colleges and universities and for careers in educational material development.

New Sidereal and Solar Time Simulator
A Sidereal and Solar Time Simulator has been added to the site. It illustrates a solar clock, a sidereal clock, the Sun, and an observer on Earth. One can advance time by a variety of different increments and see the effects on both clocks and the observer. Concepts that can be demonstrated include:
    • the 4 minute difference between solar and sidereal days the ~366 sidereal days and ~365 solar days in a year alignment with the sun for solar time, alignment with the stars for sidereal time that sidereal time is equal to the RA of an object on the meridian "if it is noon on the summer solstice, what is the sidereal time?"
    Agenda for Astronomy Education Workshop
The 13th Astronomy Education Workshop is scheduled for Saturday, October 9, 2010. Our guest speaker will be Dr. Travis Rector of the University of Alaska. He will tell us about his curriculum development on labs where students learn science by actually doing science and have participants experience this first hand with a lab on searching for novae in the Andromeda Galaxy. We will also learn about some of the new planets discovered by the Kepler mission and how these are being communicated to the public. The workshop agenda is available
