The Astronomy Program is integrated into the Physics curriculum, and is designed to be accessible to majors and non-majors alike. In addition to courses, the Astronomy Program offers opportunities teaching and research in the field. Students interested in concentrating their studies in astronomy are encouraged to major in Physics and take ASTR 201 and 301 as electives for that major. Additional opportunities for advanced study and/or research participation are available through Independent Research or Honors Thesis programs (see below) . In-depth exposure to astronomical research is available through our summer research program. Interested non-majors can obtain a general exposure to astronomy through the ASTR 101-102 survey sequence. The motivated student can follow this up as a Teaching Assistant for this sequence. Many TA's are non-majors and it's a great opportunity for those interested in teaching (especially science teaching) careers.
Astronomy Courses Offered
Astronomy 101-102
Students interested in a non-technical introduction to astronomy are encouraged to take the ASTR 101 and/or ASTR 102 survey courses. These courses are designed to introduce students to the way astronomy is done and concentrates on how we know what we know about the universe. Neither course has a prerequisite, and each qualify as lab science courses for non-majors.

Welcome to the Celestial Navigation Net! Celestial Navigation is the art and science of finding your way by the sun, moon, stars, and planets, and, in one form or another, is one of the oldest practices in human history. This webpage is an attempt to bring together all of the best Celestial Navigation resources on the internet, with pointers to other resources as well. Find out why we should study Celestial navigation in the age of GPS; get an introduction to Celestial Navigation's history , then take a look at the navigational astronomy page as a background for the theory and practice ; teachers, discover how celestial navigation can enliven the classroom , whether your field is earth science, astronomy, math, history, or literature, with special links about Vikings ; learn about navigational instruments,

Objectives of the Module
The goal of this course is to study astronomy and mathematics in a cultural context. We will look at questions like: How is the date of Chinese New Year determined? Why do the Muslim and Chinese months start on different days? Will the Moon ever look like it does on the Singapore flag? What date of the year is the earliest sunrise in Singapore? How did ancient sailors navigate? After taking this course you will become conscious of the motion of the Sun and the Moon and notice and question things you have earlier taken for granted. You will appreciate mankind's struggle through the ages and throughout the world to understand the mathematics of the heavens. This course is one of the General Education Modules at the NUS.

Project ASTRO
is a national program creating partnerships between teachers and students in grades 4 - 9 with amateur and professional astronomers. The project was created in 1993 by the Astronomical Society of the Pacific and funded by the National Science Foundation and NASA To date there are nine Project ASTRO National Expansion Sites , including Project ASTRO UTAH.
Project ASTRO UTAH
is co-sponsored by the Clark Foundation and Clark Planetarium . The project encourages collaboration among Utah universities, aerospace businesses, astronomy clubs, planetariums, and Utah schools. The Clark Foundation is deeply grateful to the members of the Project ASTRO UTAH Coalition for their generous commitment of resources and staff. Project ASTRO UTAH's goal is to enhance the core science curriculum for Utah sixth-grade students, the grade level in which students receive their first serious introduction to astronomy. In the 1998-99 school year, 29 teams of astronomers and teachers are participating in Project ASTRO UTAH in

Astronomy Education.
Instructor: John Percy
percy@astro.utoronto.ca
Organizational Meeting:
Wednesday, January 14, 1998, at 4:45 pm after the colloquium/coffee
Schedule:
Probably the first 4 hours of the mini-course will be given at the end of January, and the other 4 in late February, after the groups have completed their projects. However, this will be worked out on January 14.
Rationale
Education is important to astronomy, both to attract and train the next generation of astronomers, and to increase awareness, understanding, and appreciation of astronomy among the taxpayers and decision-makers who support us. Every graduate student has spent the majority of their life as part of the education system, and therefore has extensive experience in this field! Many graduate students will go on to professorial careers in which a significant fraction of their time is devoted to education; they will receive little or no training for this part of their work. Other graduate students will go on to purely research careers but, especially in the US, education and outreach activities will be encouraged. Grants for education projects are available from NSF, NASA and other sources. Still other graduate students may go on to careers outside academe, in which case some "training" in education may be an asset. A few may actually take up careers in teaching, planetariums or science centres etc. Every astronomer should regard education as part of their field. And every astronomer - as a citizen and taxpayer - should regard education as an important aspect of life.

Feedback * The UCL Department of Physics and Astronomy launched its popular and successful Undergraduate Diploma in Astronomy in 2001. However, it no longer satisfies new UK and European rules for HE awards. From 2006 it has been replaced by the Certificate in Astronomy, which fully satisfies these rules and has complete transferability as equivalent to the first year of a degree course.

Arecibo Remote Command Center
(ARCC) within the Center for Gravitational Wave Astrophysics (CGWA) at University of Texas Brownsville Astronomy Ambassadors summer school. This is one of three summer schools, the others in computer science and mathematics, that the university is running over the next few weeks. Unfortunately I miss out on the camping trip next week to western Texas. There the students will construct their own Dobsonian telescope that they get to keep then use it under the dark skies of the region to observe the stars. They will also visit McDonald Observatory , home of the 9.2 m Hobby-Eberley Telescope and other telescopes. When I arrived at ARCC late Friday afternoon they were busy mounting large, flat-screen LCD displays from the ceiling and walls. On Saturday afternoon there was a welcome and briefing for the five new undergraduates who have just been accepted as ARCC Scholars. They have a four-year program at UTB studying Physics and related subjects whilst working closely with scientists at the CGWA and using the ARCC to observe pulsars using the famous 300 m Arecibo radio telescope in Puerto Rico. On Sunday we welcomed the students and parents involved in the Astronomy Ambassadro program. They were able t observe an actual observing session at Arecibo conducted by UTB students using the ARCC as you can see below.

The Amateur Astronomers Association helps members and the public keep up with this exciting field in a variety of ways: The AAA underwrites its own lecture series at the American Museum of Natural History. At no charge, anyone can attend a talk given by a scientist at the forefront of research. The club offers very economical introductory classes in astronomy and astrophysics. A Seminar on Recent Advances in Astronomy meets each month at New York University. Here members discuss the latest discoveries in astronomy and their ramifications.
