Books about
Copernicus:
The Sun-centred or heliocentric theory of the solar system is usually associated with the 16th century Polish astronomer Nicholas Copernicus (1473-1543). It is often called 'the Copernican System', just as the Earth-centred 'Ptolemaic System' is named after Ptolemy. Yet neither Ptolemy nor Copernicus invented the systems named after them. Both formulated coherent mathematical frameworks to explain ideas that were 'in the air' during their lifetimes. The concept of a Sun-centred solar system was known to the ancient Greeks. It predates Copernicus by nearly two millennia and can be traced back several centuries before Ptolemy's pronouncement that the Earth stood fixed and motionless at the centre of the universe.
Ionians and Pythagoreans
In the earliest Greek cosmological systems, the Earth was envisaged as a shield-like disc floating on water and surrounded by the mythical streams of Ocean. This is the view presented around 800 BC in Homer's iliad and Odyssey . During the 6th century BC, the earliest schools of Greek philosophy emerged. Among them was the Ionian school, inspired by

    See More About:
zSB(3,3) Johannes Kepler, the son of a mercenary soldier and an innkeeper's daughter, was born prematurely just 2 days after Christmas 1571, in Weil der Stadt in Wurttemburg (now part of Germany). He attended the University of Tubingen, where he studied theology and the classics. There, he met mathematics professor, Michael Maestlin, who became his mentor. Maestlin was a proponent of the heliocentric model of the solar system and planets introduced by astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus. Johannes Kepler, too, accepted this theory immediately, seeing the hand of God in its simplicity and becoming interested in astronomy. Giving up his plan of becoming a clergyman, Johannes Kepler departed the University of Tubingen in 1594 to accept a chair in mathematics and astronomy at the university in Graz, Austria. After taking this position, he developed a complex hypothesis to explain the distance between the orbits of planets. (He, like so many before him, mistakenly believed these orbits were circular. Still, his early calculations matched the observational evidence within 5%. In his later work, he altered his thinking to believe that planetary orbits are elliptical.)

Max Planck Institute for the History of Science
    - The Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin was established in March 1994. Its research is primarily devoted to a theoretically oriented history of science, principally of the natural sciences, but with methodological perspectives drawn from the cognitive sciences and from cultural history. History and philosophy of science - The history and philosophy of science (HPS) is an academic discipline that encompasses the philosophy of science and the history of science. Although many scholars in the field are trained primarily as historians or philosophers, there are degree-granting departments of HPS at several prominent universities (see below). History of Science Society - The History of Science Society (HSS) is the primary professional society for the academic study of the history of science, founded in 1924 by George Sarton. They have over 3,000 members worldwide, and publish the quarterly journal Isis as well as the yearly Osiris, and have a well-attended yearly conference. History of science and technology - The history of science and technology (HST) is a field of history which examines how humanity's understanding of science and technology has changed over the millennia. Without this understanding, development of new technologies would have been improbable.

      INTRODUCTION
Colloquium IAU 72 is the first IAU-sponsored activity in this country, and it therefore seemed appropriate to include a paper on Astronomy in Israel. With the highly singular history of this nation, the scene will move from Eretz-Israel to Babylon (present day Iraq) and to Europe before returning to this area.
      MEGALITHS
Prehistoric astronomical activity is represented by a Stonehengelike megalithic circle and "Observatory" at Rujm-el-Hiri , near Yonathan in the Golan, the Westernmost sector of the historical Bashan plateau dating from the IIIrd Millenium BC. Star worship is mentioned in the Old Testament as beeing common among the Canaanites , but the Bashan inhabitants who built that Golan megalithic circle antedate the Canaanites. Very little is known about them and the presumably religous role of their edifice. To the IIIth Century BC Israelitis, they appeared as the work of giants (Refa'im, also Anakim, Emim, Zuzim), and this is probably the source of the legends about races of giants that had lived in Eretz-Israel prior to the Israelite conquest - including the characterization "a remnant of the giants" for Og , King of Bashan, in Deuteronomy and Joshua . Indeed, the Rujm-el-Hiri circle is just one among many megalithic remains in the Bashan, probably at the origin in Greece and England (the "Giant's Dance" = Stonehenge).

The oldest exact astronomical constant? In the work translated by William Eugene Clark, Professor of Sanskrit at Harvard University (The University of Chicago Press, Chicago, Illinois. 1930), I found the following to be written: "In a yuga the revolutions of the Sun are 4,320,000, of the Moon 57,753,336, of the Earth eastward 1,582,237,500, of Saturn 146,564, of Jupiter 364,224, of Mars 2,296,824 . . . " (page 9). Astronomy Formulas His sources remain obscure.
