IPAC Missions Gallery
Welcome to the IPAC gallery! This gallery provides images and information about projects that have been and currently are being supported by IPAC. The Spitzer Space Telescope was launched in August 2003. During its 2.5-year mission, Spitzer will obtain images and spectra by detecting the infrared energy, or heat, radiated by objects in space between wavelengths of 3 and 180 microns. The Spitzer Image Gallery contains several of the highest resolution infrared images to date. To learn more about the Spitzer mission visit the Spitzer Space Telescope home page The Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) is an orbiting space telescope which was launched in April 2003 to observe galaxies in ultraviolet light. The GALEX image gallery contains many of the highest resolution ultraviolet images taken to date. To learn more about the GALEX mission visit the GALEX home page The Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS), which began taking data in 1997, is a ground based survey which scanned the entire sky in three near-infrared bands. The 2MASS Gallery includes several spectacular images of galaxies as well as regions within our own Galaxy, including portions of the Galactic Plane and the Orion Nebula. The Best of 2003: Top 10 Astronomy Images
By Robert Roy Britt

Seldom does astronomy enjoy a year with such avid and widespread amateur participation, from first-timers watching compelling sky events and photographing them, to a kid who stumped the experts with one remarkable picture that enthralled the media and the public around the world. The Summer of Mars, when the red planet was closer than it had been in nearly 60,000 years, engaged even the most casual skywatchers around the world. Telescope supplies were depleted. Bars in Arizona threw Mars observing parties. While astronomers captured the moment with big observatories, regular folks held digital cameras up to telescope eyepieces to create their own personal Martian photo albums. Later, in November, the second total lunar eclipse of the year and one of the most colorful in memory caused another round of excitement in the amateur ranks. The digital pictures from backyards and balconies were as remarkable as they were plentiful. Among the standout amateur images (No. 8 on this list) was a photo of a strange object in the sky that had astronomers wholly intrigued but left them utterly mystified.

stereo astronomy images
this is one of the cooler things i've seen in a while: stereo astronomy images created by J-P Metsavainio at astro anarchy
remember those images from 15 years ago or so, that looked like spotty noise, but if you adjusted where your eyes focused, you could see a three dimensional image pop out that's what J-P Metsavainio has done with images of astronomical objects! he explains how to view the images on his website.
i remember the first time i saw these types of images at the ohio state fair. i couldnt figure out what everyone was staring at, but the moment i finally figured out how to "see" them and watched the statue of liberty pop out of the flat image - i was amazed!
now, J-P Metsavainio has created a very interesting method for imagining the 3D structure of astronomical objects that we can only view from one direction! content: astrophotography

The barred spiral galaxy NGC 1365 imaged by Chris Lopez (c/o 2005) on 8 March 2005 using the 14 inch TIE South telescope at Las Campanas Observatory in Chile. Chris processed and stacked eleven images of this galaxy using CCDSoft image processing software. The spiral galaxy NGC 4945 imaged by Hannah Potter (c/o 2006) on 28 March and 14 April 2005 using the 14 inch TIE South telescope at Las Campanas Observatory in Chile . Hannah processed and stacked ten images of this edge on spiral using CCDSoft image processing software. Supernova 2005af is just visible (arrowed) at the bottom of the image. The supernova was discovered on 8 February 2005

32. The Galaxy Gallery: Messier Objects
Provides images of Messier objects.
http://zebu.uoregon.edu/messier.html
CCD Images of Messier Objects:
These objects were discovered in the 18th century and were catalogued so that eyeball observers using small telescopes would not confuse them with comets. With the naked eye as a detector, most of these objects appear as dim grayish blobs. They are considered a challenge to find for many amateur astronomers. These objects are generally of large angular size and hence larger than the typical field of view of many CCD detector systems; hence CCD images of these objects are somewhat rare compared to photographic ones. In this resource, we offer CCD images of many of these objects, taken with a variety of different telescopes, along with a description or narration of brief facts about them. Where appropriate we have linked additional images or diagrams to further explain their properties or structure.
