Mars Doubles in Brightness - The red planet, already intense, is about to get much brighter. Step outside tonight around midnight and look east. About halfway up the sky you'll see the planet Mars. It looks like an intense red star, the brightest light in the midnight sky other than the Moon. Here's the amazing part: Between now and the end of October, Mars, already so bright, will double in brightness again. zSB(3,3)

MIT, Harvard offer solution to Mars enigma
Planetary scientists have puzzled for years over an apparent contradiction on Mars. Abundant evidence points to an early warm, wet climate on the red planet, but there's no sign of the widespread carbonate rocks, such as limestone, that should have formed in such a climate. Full story

Astronomers funded by NASA are monitoring the trajectory of an asteroid estimated to be 50 meters (164 feet) wide that is expected to cross Mars' orbital path early next year. Observations provided by the astronomers and analyzed by NASA's Near-Earth Object Office at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., indicate the object may pass within 30,000 miles of Mars at about 6 a.m. EST (3 a.m. PST) on Jan. 30, 2008.

NASA's Northrop Grumman-built James Webb Space Telescope has passed its most significant mission milestone to date, the Mission Critical Design Review, or MCDR. This signifies the integrated observatory will meet all science and engineering requirements for its mission. "I'm delighted by this news and proud of the Webb program's great technical achievements," said Eric Smith, Webb telescope program scientist at NASA Headquarters in Washington. "The independent team conducting the review confirmed the designs, hardware and test plans for Webb will deliver the fantastic capabilities always envisioned for NASA's next major space observatory. The scientific successor to Hubble is making great progress."

Posted on June 18, 2010 by admin Chandrayaan-2 is an excellent example of this post-Cold War attitude. But it is more than just a symbol; this mission will do good science. It will teach us some things about a body that still has a surprising number of questions associated with it: our own satellite. Now, how much do you think our hypothetical aliens could learn about our planet from that? Granted, the analogy has some rather large holes in it, since we really can learn a lot about the moon, or any body, just by observing it from afar. Due to recent technological advances, we can now gather quite a bit of information without actually going there. But no matter how much we learn from a distance, there will always be questions that can only be answered by going there, and a boxful of rocks is only the beginning. That fundamental fact is the rationale behind further exploration of the moon.
