Libraries in Astronomy Research Centers
By Lisa Johnston on April 16, 2008 1:10 PM No Comments As librarians continue to face difficult choices regarding publication formats, electronic preservation, and escalating journal prices the need for communication and partnerships within our research communities is greater than ever. This is why Terry Mahoney (IAC Tenerife, Spain) initiated and wrote the "Declaration Concerning the Evolving Role of Libraries in Research Centres." The document has been co-signed by several astronomy librarians and has now been sent to the International Astronomy Union in the hope that they will help to distribute it widely among astronomers and perhaps, eventually, have it adopted by the IAU as official policy. Please read the full document here and I look forward to hearing your comments: T. J. MAHONEY

Mexico’s National Astronomy Conference The National Astronomy Conference (CNA) is the unique national meeting for professional astronomers in Mexico. This annual event gathers researchers and students in astrophysics and related topics. This year the CNA will be held in México City between the 15th. and 18th. of April, 2008 and is organized by two institutions: the Universidad Iberoamericana at Mexico City (UIA) , which will host most acitivites, and the Instituto Nacional de Investigaciones Nucleares (ININ) . Located on the East side of Mexico City, both institutions have a history of collaboration among themselves and with other Mexican research centers. Nine representatives from the main Mexican astronomy research centers form the Scientific Organizing Committee (COCCNA) while researchers and students from UIA and ININ integrate the Local Organizing Committee (COLCNA). The complete program can be found in the main page and includes contributed oral and poster presentations as well as invited talks given by outstanding scientist on topics of interest for the community.

Antenna
An antenna is a device used to transmit and receive electromagnetic waves, such as radio waves and microwaves. Antennas are found in a great variety of communication devices, including radios and television sets, weather radar systems, satellite communications systems, and radio astronomy research centers. Your local radio station uses an antenna to transmit the programs it broadcasts. Words that are spoken or music that is played within the station are converted to electrical signals. These signals are then transmitted to an antenna in the form of an electric current. Electrons inside the antenna vibrate back and forth with the same frequency as the incoming The antenna for a Doppler weather radar site. Doppler radar can be used to detect various weather conditions. (Reproduced by permission of The Stock Market electric current. The vibration is characteristic of the sounds produced within the station. As these electrons vibrate, they create an electromagnetic wave in the air around the antenna. That wave spreads out and travels in all directions from the antenna. The frequency of the wave is the same as the frequency of the electron vibration in the antenna and of the sounds spoken in the station.

Sun Drawings
Original Press Release
November 9, 1995 Art and science join hands at Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Haystack Observatory with the installation this month of the first component of the Global Sun Drawing by artist Janet Saad-Cook in the observatory's new library. The global Sun Drawing is a single, globe-encircling work of art brought to life through Saad-Cook's placement of permanent sun-activated sculptures, called Sun Drawings, in various public sites throughout the world. To connect the Sun Drawings into a unified work of art, Saad-Cook is incorporating a unique marker image that appears sequentially at each site in harmony with the earth's rotation and the daily sweep of sunlight. The Haystack Sun Drawing is now open for public viewing, by appointment, at the Observatory in Westford, MA. As one of the world's leading astronomy research centers, the MIT Haystack Observatory is particularly appropriate for this first link in a global art work that relies on the cycle of the sun. Saad-Cook also plans permanent installations for public spaces in France, Australia, India and Japan as well as elsewhere in the United States. Artist Janet Saad-Cook originated and developed the patented Sun Drawing process through 15 years of experimentation and research.. The results are sculptures of reflective elements (optically coated glass and mirrored metals) that interact with direct sunlight to cast gradually changing images onto interior surfaces. Each day as sunlight sweeps through the space and touches the reflective elements each one comes alive to reflect its own unique image onto the surrounding walls and ceiling, creating shimmering, multi-colored images that evolve and change moment-to-moment and season-to-season.

Sun Paints Pictures at Haystack
(Published in Tech Talk 12/13/1995) As art meets technology, computers and digital processing tend to overshadow traditional media such as paint, charcoal and marble. But artist Janet Saad-Cook uses technology to utilize a sculptural element that predates computers, acrylics or bronze - the sun. MIT's Haystack Observatory in Westford, Mass., is the first site for Ms. Saad-Cook's Global Sun Drawing Project, a series of sculptures activated by the sun which the artist plans to install in observatories throughout the world. In a process that was developed and patented through 15 years of experimentation and research, Ms. Saad-Cook shapes and assembles highly reflective materials and positions the reflective instruments in a pre- selected path of direct sunlight. As the light touches the reflective elements, an image of light very gradually appears on the surrounding walls and ceiling, slowly and subtly changing with the earth's rotation. The size of sun drawing varies with the intensity and angle of the sunlight and the size of the wall on which the image is reflected. Three sun drawings, "Jupiter Ascends," "Albedo" and "Venus," are on view in the new Haystack Library through mid-October, 1996. Other installations are planned for public spaces in observatories in France, Australia, India, Japan and elsewhere in the United States. The installations will be unified into a single work of art by the incorporation of a unique image that appears sequentially at each site, in harmony with the earth's rotation and the daily sweep of sunlight.
