25. Course Policies
We hope the course will increase your interest in astronomy, and if it does you are lucky because you are in the middle of one of the world's greatest astronomy research centers.
http://ircamera.as.arizona.edu/NatSci102/images/extinstruct.htm
Be sure to follow the instructions below and you will get more out of the course. From Gary Larson. See http://www.mathematik.uni-marburg.de/~hampel/larson/larson.html How to ace this course: 1. Come to class The lectures will help you master the material. In addition, we will occasionally have you do in-class exercises, and you will not get credit for them if you do not come and do them. 2. Take notes: you can print out a note outline for the four course sections from the syllabus. Bring it to class and fill in as much of the outline there as you can - fill in the rest from the notes while you study. 3. Study the lecture notes. They include sets of questions that you should be able to answer - if you select the wrong answer, you will be linked back to the part of the notes you should study. 4. Review your written notes, any breakout exercises, and the questions within the lecture notes to help prepare for exams. 5. Relax and have a good time. Astronomy is interesting, and the course will give you a chance to sample it and enjoy it! In fact, the notes have a lot of additional material we hope you will sample. Rules 1. Do the course work independently, and to the best of your ability - that way you will learn more.

A new Cornell group presides over changes at Arecibo Observatory
By David Brand An oversight committee for Arecibo Observatory on Puerto Rico has been established to act as a management link between Cornell, which manages the huge telescope, and the funding agency, the National Science Foundation (NSF). "Technically, the contractor for the observatory is Cornell. But Cornell is doing so many other things that the NSF wanted assurance that more attention is being paid to the management of NAIC," said Martha Haynes, the Goldwin Smith Professor of Astronomy, who is chairing the new committee. The NAIC is the National Astronomy and Ionosphere Center, formed at Cornell in 1971 to manage the telescope for the federal agency. The NAIC plays a particularly prominent role at Cornell because it is the only federally funded research and development center on campus. One of the first tasks to occupy the four-person committee officially called the Cornell NAIC Oversight Committee, or CNOC is the search for a new director of NAIC to succeed Paul Goldsmith, the J.A. Weeks Professor in the Physical Sciences, who is stepping down after a decade in the post ( read accompanying story ). The new director, expected to be announced shortly, is going to face major changes in the way science is done at the national observatories, said Haynes. "There is an enormous amount going on."

    Aluminum Family
The aluminum family consists of elements in Group 13 of the periodic table: boron (B), aluminum (Al), gallium (Ga), indium (In), and thallium (Tl). The family is usually named after the second element, aluminum, rather than the first, boron, because boron is less typical of the family members than is aluminum.

If you prefer to buy a text, there are many at the bookstore. They may be organized a bit differently from the notes, but reading them may help you follow the course. But try the notes by themselves first, and beware that the nature of the course is quite different from most "straight" astronomy texts. In fact, you might find it more rewarding to buy some of the books recommended below, all of which discuss topics in these notes and many of which were used in preparing it. If these books are not just what you want, go further down the page where we list other things to do in Tucson connected with astronomy. "Life Everywhere," by David Darling, 2002, Basic Books, ISBN 0465015646, easy introduction to astrobiology "The Sleepwalkers," by Arthur Koestler, 1990, Viking Penguin, ISBN 0140192468, Kepler and the development of his model of the solar system "Coming of Age in the Milky Way," by Timothy Ferris, 1989, Anchor Books, ISBN 0385263260 "Newton's Clock," by Ivars Peterson, 1995, W. This article is about the buildable support structure. For the non-buildable campaign only structures, see Technology Center Technology centers are large buildings housing sophisticated computers and data banks. Due to emphasis being put on mobility in modern warfare, Mobile Construction Vehicles carry limited amounts of blueprints and data, both to minimize the need for expensive data storage units as well as to minimize the risk of advanced technology falling into the hands of the enemy. When deployed, the Construction Yards' crews would have access to only basic weapon designs as well as building blueprints. To increase the array of combat technologies available to them, commanders would have to construct communication centers, such as Radar Domes to establish uplinks to central command, which would then allow them to construct the facilities necessary to process and put in production blueprints of advanced units.
