    Astronomical Software on Linux
What is the linuxastro mailing list ?
Well, it really was a mailing list of people who were interesting in porting astronomical software to linux. Luckily Linux can now be considered mainstream and in your local neighborhood there should now be somebody able to help you with either installing or running linux (since this page totally ignores that aspect). This page will merely provide links to astronomical software that is known to run under linux or have direct binaries available.
    Listing
First here are some meta-links: lists that provide links to packages. Not all of them 100% linux specific, but the majority of them have either been ported, or should be doable:

    Astronomy for Kids
There are many programs in astronomy software that are helpful for kids. Astronomy for kids involves many topics like comets, the Moon, the Sun, constellations, black holes, galaxies and stars. Kids can use different types of telescopes and binoculars to pursue their interest in astronomy. These devices can be applied to study the planets, the comets, the Moon, the Sun, the stars, the universe, the eclipses, the constellations and the black holes.

However, if you're like me, this is not information you ever learned in school. Amateur kids astronomy, the inspirational kind for non-astrophysicists, is not taught in school. It's like the non-existent course on "how to invest in the stock market" that would have saved you a bundle if only they had had a course like that in college. Luckily, like a lot of things on the big list of “Things I wish I had learned in school," there are ways to fill in the gap of your knowledge and that of your children. First, obviously, is a trip to local museum and planetarium. Not surprisingly, I have not done that with my kids. Instead, I jumped for accessible tools we could look at home and take with us on trips anywhere I think there will be a big black sky we can peer into together. By all means, go to the local planetarium. Better yet, if there is an observatory, check that out on a clear, warm summer night. However, if you have little kids who would not sit through a planetarium show or stay up late enough to take the Observatory route, here are a few other ideas:

The name itself conjures up images of planets hurtling around the solar system, whilst we earthlings throw our very best technology at them, propelled by fire-excreting rockets into the depths of space. I came across this program whilst searching for educational software for Physics. The advert on their web site for Orrery is a concise introduction to a highly sophisticated package. Orrery arrives on two DD floppy discs, cunningly cased in an ordinary CD box, with its interior re-designed to house them. The cover of the box is a fairly basic piece of artwork printed using a standard inkjet machine. Ideally this should have been done professionally, or should be re-done using the rather superior quality print attainable from today's modern printers. However, despite its rather ordinary appearances, the best is yet to come. The first disk houses the HTML manual, and a copy of

    Sky Atlas 2000 Page Labels
I've created a set of printable page labels for the Sky Atlas 2000 Second Edition (1998) by Wil Tirion and Roger W. Sinnott. This is simply an Acrobat PDF file you can print out onto adhesive mailing labels and stick on the backs of the pages of your spiral-bound Sky Atlas. (I have the Deluxe Edition. I am not 100% sure it will work with others.) No more searching in the dark for a page with a particular constellation or Messier object! Warning: I've only created the labels for the northern-hemisphere pages (1-23) and the Virgo galaxy cluster page, B1. (Lazy me....) If there is a high demand, I will add the other pages. The labels should work with any labels, such as Avery, that are laid out with 30 labels to an 8.5x11 page. You can also just print them out to plain paper and tape them in. PLEASE email if this is a helpful solution for you, as I will not be tracking downloads of this item!

THE POSITIONS AND EPHEMERIDES FOR THE SUN, THE EARTH, THE MOON AND THE PLANETS OF THE SOLAR SYSTEM ARE CALCULATED USING THE BRETAGNON AND FRANCOU "VSOP87" (VARIATIONS SÉCULAIRES DES ORBITES PLANÉTAIRES) PLANET THEORY. THIS IS BASED ON THE OLDER JPL DE200 NUMERICAL INTEGRATION (WHICH STILL FORMS THE BASIS OF THE TABULATED PLANETARY POSITIONS IN THE "ASTRONOMICAL ALMANAC".
IN ALL CASES, POSITIONS ARE INITIALLY CALCULATED IN A HELIOCENTRIC REFERENCE FRAME, AND THEN RIGOROUSLY REDUCED TO A GEOCENTRIC FRAME, APPLYING CORRECTIONS FOR LIGHT TRAVEL TIME, GRAVITATIONAL DEFLECTION OF LIGHT BY THE PLANET, AND ANNUAL ABERRATION. THE GEOCENTRIC POSITION IS THEN CONVERTED TO A TOPOCENTRIC POSITION.

    HOME CONTENTS
    Astronomy Software
Astronomy software can help you in selecting, finding and observing astronomical objects. Also, astronomy software can help you learn about the objects being observed. The main reasons to use astronomy software is to better utilize your observing session time by developing an observing plan of astronomical objects to be observed before the observing session starts and then reducing the time to locate astronomical objects during a observing session. Other benefits of astronomy software include identifying unknown objects found during an observing session and learning more about the nature of the objects being observed. Astronomy software is organized into seven categories: Planetarium Software
    Observing Software
    Electronic Databases with Software Viewers
    Educational Astronomy Software
    CCD Control Software for Astroimaging
    Imaging Processing Software
    Telescope Making Software
The primary purpose and key selection features of each of the seven categories is given below.
    Planetarium Software
Primary purpose: Creates sky charts to be used in an observing session that shows the location of astronomical objects planned to be observed. Displays the sky with the astronomical objects as seen with unaided eye views, binocular views, telescope views and astroimaging views at the desired observing time.
