AIPS++ ( Astronomical Information Processing System )
AIPS++ is a software package which will calibrate and image (primarily) radio astronomical data. It is being written in an object-oriented style using the C++ language. AIPS++ is being developed by an international consortium. AIPS++ is not yet of interest to users, although there are some email reflectors you may wish to join for information. A beta library release is available via anonymous ftp. This may be of interest to C++ software developers.

    Alcyone Ephemeris
    Alcyone Ephemeris 4.1 is an accurate and fast astronomical ephemeris calculator covering the period 3000 BC to AD 3000. It calculates heliocentric, geocentric, and topocentric positions of the Sun (Earth), planets, 18 natural satellites, and small bodies (minor planets and comets) in ecliptical, equatorial, and horizontal coordinates, with optional corrections for parallax and refraction; rectangular coordinates, velocity, apparent diameter, magnitude, phase, lunar libration, orbital elements, differences for all of these, and more.
    In addition Alcyone Ephemeris offers a wealth of functionality: star chart generation, 3D-visualization of heliocentric and planetocentric orbits, plotting ephemeris data (as a function of time or in a parametric plot), searching for specific values, data export (Excel, HTML, XML, Text), scripting to write programs for more complex computations, and printing. Access to the complete Bright Star Catalogue, a calendar conversion tool, and an astronomical event calculator are available.
    The ephemeris calculation is based upon Steve Moshier's analytical ephemeris using trigonometric expansions for the earth and planets and the lunar ephemeris ELP2000-85 of Chapront-Touzι and Chapront for the moon, both adjusted to Jet Propulsion Laboratory's DE404 (see

    AstroImageBrowser 1.1.2
    AstroImageBrowser is a flexible and powerful front end to Digitized Sky Survey (DSS) internet repository of astronomical images for MacOS X 10.4 (or greater) and is distributed as shareware. Images of astronomical objects in any part of the sky can be downloaded, manipulated, overlayed (with a grid, camera/CCD geometries, object and star labels or other pictures), converted, scaled, colorized, annotated, blinked, saved, cached and printed. AstroImageBrowser is particularly useful as an astrophotography planning tool but can equally well be used to explore or browse astronomical objects. After you have planned and taken your picture you can use AstroImageBrowser to superimpose it on the DSS image. People interested in Astronomy should find AstroImageBrowser useful and fun even if they don't have a telescope.

    N -Body / Particle Simulation Methods
    Amara's Recap of Particle Simulation Methods ("ARPSM" !!)
    My own experience with N-body simulation methods are with schemes using direct integration of forces ("Particle Particle" methods), and also with the symplectic methods. When a discussion in August 1995 on the sci.math.num-analysis newsgroup about N-body/Particle simulation methods caught my attention, I wrote this article to keep track of the different schemes (too many acronyms!), and to learn what researchers in the field are using today. http://orsa.sourceforge.net
    Home Applications ORSA@work ScreenShots ... About News Announcing SurfaceCoverage Tool May 12 2008 We've released a new tool: SurfaceCoverage . Please follow the link for more details. New Tool Jul 1 2007 After over two years of quiet but active development, we're releasing today the first application based on the new ORSA code base: RendezvousWithVesta . This tool has been developed in support to the NASA DAWN mission , and allows to accurately simulate the dynamics of a spacecraft orbiting the asteroid (4) Vesta . It's main purpose is to determine what is the orbit of the DAWN spacecraft that provides the best coverage of Vesta's surface. This orbit will depend on Vesta's physical parameters, so it cannot be fully determined yet, as we don't know what is Vesta's mass with sufficient accuracy today. Nevertheless, by using RendezvousWithVesta the DAWN Science Team can investigate the possible effects of Vesta's mass on the overall surface coverage, and users in the general public are welcome to download the tool and experiment with it, and possibly collaborate with us on the ORSA-tools mailing list . Read more about it at the RendezvousWithVesta page and download it here RendezvousWithVesta is the first ORSA tool based on the Qt4 framework , that permits to easily develop open-source, GUI based applications and port them to Linux, Mac and Windows. Other improvements include the possibility to import/export
