A dominant feature of most planetariums is the large dome -shaped projection screen onto which scenes of stars planets and other celestial objects can be made to appear and move realistically to simulate the complex 'motions of the heavens'. The celestial scenes can be created using a wide variety of technologies, for example precision-engineered 'star balls' that combine optical and electro-mechanical technology, slide projector video and fulldome projector systems, and lasers. Whatever technologies are used, the objective is normally to link them together to provide an accurate relative motion of the sky. Typical systems can be set to display the sky at any point in time, past or present, and often to show the night sky as it would appear from any point of

How do Planetariums Work? The definition of a planetarium facility built primarily for presenting programming on astronomy , the night sky, and for training in celestial navigation . Most planetariums are recognized by the large dome-shaped projection screen onto which scenes of stars planets and other celestial objects can be made to appear and move to simulate the complex motions of celestial objects. Visuals are created using a wide variety of technologies such as optical-mechanical star projectors slide projector video and full-dome projector systems, and lasers. Planetarium projection systems can be set to display the sky at any point in time, and often to show the night sky as it would appear from any point of latitude on Earth.
      Traditional Planetariums
Planetarium programming was originally based on the use of optical-mechanical devices called star-balls, which project points of light onto a dome. These star projectors are simple and effective analogs to the night sky, and included a geared system to reproduce the motion of the planets. Planetarium operators and producers often combined 35mm still projectors, standard video, and a variety of specially built mechanical projectors to display visual effects and images to build programming for the dome. These systems are still used today in planetariums across the global and are referred to as traditional planetariums and make up roughly 65% of the domes in the world.

In the 1940's, chemical engineer and philanthropist John Motley Morehead approached the eminent Harvard astronomer Harlow Shapley with a question. Morehead wanted to build either an observatory or a planetarium for the children of his native North Carolina, and he asked Shapley which the astronomer would recommend. Shapley suggested that a planetarium would be better-because he felt the people of North Carolina were among the "most astronomically ignorant" people in the United States.
Morehead responded that if Shapley would amend his statement to say that the people of North Carolina were among the "most ignorant in astronomical matters," he would build a planetarium. Shapley did, and Morehead did, and the rest is history-46 years of history, to be precise, during which more than four million people have been introduced to the wonders of the universe at the Morehead Planetarium-thanks to the hard work of two generations of planetarium staff.

Browser Visualisation General - Introduction These pages are optimised and best viewed with Mozilla-Firefox Definition of Planetarium Categories General - Special topics The realisation of the modern planetarium comes in many shapes and sizes, ranging from a small umbrella-like facility of hardly 3 meters to huge domes providing space for several hundred visitors. Such a planetarium may shelter an opto-mechanical star projector (the classical style) as well as a number of video projectors for a digital presentation (virtual style). Difficulties arise when evaluating a planetarium's prominence, especially, when seen through the eyes of the public, who are accustomed to classifying them to "large", "middle", and "small" buildings. A closer look at the parameters, that determine a planetarium, reveals that only two are stable against arbitrariness: the diameter of the dome and the type of the projector. The number of seats, often mentioned in the planetarium's description, turns out to be of little significance.
