      John Elway
Hall of Fame NFL Legend The numbers never told John Elway's story. His overall statistics are impressive, but his true measure as a player ran straight to his heart. It took two championships at the end of his career to certify his stature, to soften the mark of three Super Bowl losses. After 16 seasons, Elway retired as the starting quarterback with the most wins in NFL history with a 148-82-1 record. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in August of 2004. A renowned scrambler, Elway led 47 winning or tying drives in the fourth quarter or overtime, more than any quarterback. "In tight situations I stop worrying about turnovers," he said. Elway became the first quarterback to start five Super Bowls, was selected for the Pro Bowl nine times and in 1987 was voted the NFL's Most Valuable Player by the Associated Press. By taking risks as a passer, he made plays other quarterbacks couldn't. John Elway closed his career with an MVP performance in the 1999 Super Bowl.

Elway led Broncos on "The Drive"

- It is known, simply, as "The Drive." Quarterback John Elway led the Denver Broncos back from defeat numerous teams, but his performance in the AFC championship game against the Cleveland Browns topped the list of his heroics, elevating him to superstar status. Trailing 20-13 with 5½ minutes left in the fourth quarter at Cleveland, Denver took over on its two, 98 yards away from the tying touchdown. "I suddenly flashed on something I was thinking about before the game," Elway said later. "Great quarterbacks make great plays in great games. That's what it's all about, isn't it?" Elway made like a great quarterback, smartly passing and scrambling the Broncos down to the Browns' 14-yard line. After a nine-yard run by Elway moved the ball to the five, on third-and-one he fired a dart in the end zone to Mark Jackson with 37 seconds left. Rich Karlis' extra point tied the game. In overtime, two Elway completions were good for 50 yards, setting up a 33-yard field goal by Karlis that gave the Broncos a 23-20 victory and sent them to the Super Bowl.

Biography
Elway was born in Port Angeles, Washington. He attended Granada Hills High School in Granada Hills, California, and then Stanford University, where he was a baseball player and quarterback. At Stanford he played in one of the most famous football games of all time, the 1982 Big Game versus the University of California at Berkeley, which ended with "The Play", an amazing play with five laterals that allowed Cal to win the game. By the end of his senior year, Elway had set nearly every Pac-10 and Stanford career record for total offense and passing. He was a consensus All-American and finished second in Heisman Trophy balloting. He graduated with a degree in economics.
In the 1983 draft, Elway was selected as the 1st overall pick by the Baltimore Colts, but he threatened to quit football and play professional baseball if he was not traded (he had by then played two summers in the New York Yankees organization). The Colts traded him to the Denver Broncos for two veterans and a first-round pick in the 1984 draft. In his fifth season, Elway was named league MVP. He finally won a Super Bowl in the 1997 season after three previously failed attempts, behind the overwhelming running game of Terrell Davis. In 1998, the Broncos repeated this feat and Elway was awarded the MVP of Super Bowl XXXIII; it was his last game.

John supporting John - Photo: DP, Hyoung Chang The Denver Post has the full scoop - but today John Elway and John Lynch came out to show their support for the GOP and its struggling candidate, John McCain. The Post says a roaring crowd of 4,000+ supporters came out to see Elway - err - McCain today. In a cheesy coach-like peptalk to McCain, Elway said, "It's the fourth quarter ... and I know a thing or two about comebacks." No question that Elway was able to get butts in seats at the rally - but will he move the needle to help J-Mac with a comeback in the presidential race?  We'll know in a few weeks... Read my previous story about Jonno supporting Jonno.  I'm getting some interesting comments - love it - keep 'em coming: Comment from Luke :  "Thinking he (Elway) can single-handedly rescue Colorado for McCain is almost as arrogant as pretending he could have won a Super Bowl without Terrell Davis."
