WALTER 'SWEETNESS' PAYTON.
Payton, Walter Jerry 1954-1999
1954–99, American football player, b. Columbia, Miss. He played at Jackson State College (now Jackson State Univ.) in Mississippi before being drafted as a running back by the Chicago Bears in 1975. He spent his entire career with the Bears and set many records, including all-time rushing yards (16,726), most 100-yard rushing games (77), most 1,000-yard rushing seasons (10), and most yards gained rushing in a game (275). Noted for his durability, Payton was the National Football League’s most valuable player in 1977 (the youngest player to win the award) and won his only Super Bowl in 1985. He retired in 1987.
The funky style of Walter Payton
Walter Payton once ran for a record 275 yards against the Minnesota Vikings. He ran for 16,726 yards in his career, more than any other player. When we measure his greatness in these days after his sad, early death, we will rightly lean on these amazing numbers because they remind us of the degree to which Payton separated himself from more than 75 years’ worth of NFL running backs.
By all accounts, there were plenty of reasons to admire Payton off the field, as well. His teammates describe a man of energy and wit, whose genuine caring and generosity were the stuff of rare and lasting friendships. Mike Singletary and Chris Berman were eloquent on this point on Monday Night Football this week, reminding us that clichés about how someone "was a better person than he was a player" usually well up from deep reserves of true feeling and long histories of rewarding experience. Walter Payton - Sweetness to the End By James Alder , About.com Guide
    See More About:
Running back Walter Payton #34 of the Chicago Bears looks on during a game in 1984. Rick Stewart/Getty Images zSB(3,3) He was called Sweetness, but to defenders Walter Payton was anything but. He was an unstoppable force running with the ball, he had great hands as a receiver out of the backfield, and he could throw a devastating block that would knock defenders out of their socks. He also seemed to have a sixth sense for picking up the blitz. Walter Payton was the type of blocker that could lay out a defender coming through a hole in the line just like a linebacker mowing down a running back. Walter's biggest assets on the field were his leg strength and incredible balance. He could run over a would-be tackler with the force of a freight train. Or he might simply hit a defender hard enough to bounce off, and around him. He also had a straight arm that could take a defender off his feet and send him sliding across the turf on his face mask. Walter always played the game with the attitude that if he was going to get hit at the end of the play, he was going to dish out a little punishment of his own; something to make the defender remember him the next time they met. Seldom did Walter finish a play by running out of bounds. He was always looking for that extra yard, and that ever-so-slight advantage over his opponent.

Posted: Tuesday November 02, 1999 05:08 PM Walter Payton was inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame in 1993. AP CHICAGO (AP) Walter Payton, the NFL's greatest rusher whose aggressive style masked a playful temperament that earned him the nickname "Sweetness," died Monday at age 45. Payton died of bile duct cancer that was discovered during his treatment earlier this year for primary sclerosing cholangitis, a rare liver disease. Payton rushed for 16,726 yards in his 13-year career, one of sport's most awesome records. And Barry Sanders ensured it would be one of the most enduring, retiring in July despite being just 1,458 yards shy of breaking Payton's mark. "I want to set the record so high that the next person who tries for it, it's going to bust his heart," Payton once said.

Considered by many to be the greatest running back, and arguably the best all-around player, in the history of the National Football League (NFL), Walter Payton was born in Columbia, Mississippi, in what had been in the early part of the twentieth century a logging boom town. By the time Payton was born, however, the Pearl River, upon which the logging industry depended for shipping, had silted up, and prosperity and jobs left with the barges that could no longer ply the waterway. Payton's parents, Edward and Alyne, had three children, of whom Walter was the youngest. The eldest, Eddie, was also an athlete; he followed his brother into the NFL three years after Walter was recruited by the ...

Drawing from a depth that seemed eternal, powered by an engine of endless energy and durability, he simply refused to be stopped. It figures that it would take the rarest of diseases, angry and unpronounceable (primary sclerosing cholangitis combined with bile duct cancer), to finally bring him down for good.
