Posted August 31, 2008 In July, the Chicago White Sox honored one of their own with a new sculpture at U.S. Cellular Field. The honoree was Harold Baines. Harold Baines? Yet the White Sox, who have never been rich in baseball legends, have a thing for commissioning sculptures, so they had to honor somebody. And thus Baines became the seventh White Sox figure immortalized in bronze, standing proudly alongside other franchise legends...like Billy Pierce. What I found intrigued me. Most anyone who follows the game knows that statue). Players like White, Nuxhall and Horton might be legends on a local level, but could they have possibly been slam-dunk choices when the powers-that-be brainstormed over who they should immortalize next? Working from the context of fame and reputation, what makes the list of out-of-the-blue works of art like Baines and White all the more puzzling is when you consider the list of those who have no statues. Lefty Grove has nothing dedicated to him. Neither does Nap Lajoie. Nor Tris Speaker. Pete Alexander, with 373 wins in the books? Zip-nil-nada. While many new major league ballparks have jumped on the bronze bandwagon

Debuting in the major leagues with the Sox in 1980, Baines’ performance was called “gorgeous, absolutely complete” by baseball writer Bill James in 1984. In the same year (1984), Baines ended the longest game in major league baseball history with a home run; the bat he used is currently on display in the Baseball Hall of Fame. Baines continued to excel during the career that went on for more than two decades, during which time he played for the Sox, the Texas Rangers, the Oakland Athletics, the Baltimore Orioles, and the Cleveland Indians. Career Life's Work Harold Baines is considered a consummate Baltimore Orioles hitter , who combines his power-hitting skills with an uncanny ability to hit for average. He has also been named an American League All-Star six times in his career, the last in 1999, as a Baltimore Oriole. After an impressive spring training in Sarasota berth RBI catcher works a hitter ... " he explained to Sports Illustrated Two years later, Baines was a principal in one of the most historic trades in baseball history. Baines was sent to the Texas Rangers for Sammy Sosa At the time, the trade made sense for the Rangers to make, considering that Baines finished with the season with a .309 batting average, second only to Boston Red Sox third baseman Wade Boggs. At age 40, Baines was still an effective major-league hitter. In 1999 he managed 25 HRs and 103 RBI, as Baines spent the season playing for both the Baltimore Orioles and Cleveland Indians, which acquired him late in the season for its American League playoff run. The 2001 season was not exactly one for the ages for Baines, who played in just 32 games for the White Sox. His batting average slumped to a

WHEN IT BAINES HAROLD BOMB SOAKS WETTE
By JOHN GIANNONE Tuesday, August 13th 1996, 2:00AM CHICAGO The weather was warmer and the wind was calmer. Other than that, the setting and the subjects were identical. And the result was every bit as crushing for John Wetteland and the Yankees. Three months and two days ago, Wetteland surrendered a game-ending home run to Harold Baines at chilly Comiskey Park. Last night, Baines got Wetteland with a nasty case of deja blue. Baines, who has forged a career out of crushing fat fastballs, walloped a one-out solo home run to left-center in the 10th inning that gave the White Sox a 3-2 triumph over the Yanks. The homer, Baines' 19th, came on a belt-high, 2-and-2 fastball and just cleared the 375-foot sign on the Chicago bullpen. As Baines scampered around the bases and met a throng of teammates at home plate, Wetteland glanced at the slugger, dropped his head and paced slowly to the dugout. It was a scene stolen from May 11, when Baines rocked Wetteland for a game-winning, two-run homer in the ninth. And it climaxed a dismal final few innings in which the Yanks inexplicably ran themselves out of the game. "The thing I keep going over and over is I just didn't think he'd be ready for it," said Wetteland, who threw four off-speed pitches prior to the gopher ball. "I guess he was just sitting on it the whole time."

Title: Eleven Exoplanet Host Star Angular Diameters from the CHARA Array
Authors: Ellyn K. Baines Harold A. McAlister Theo A. ten Brummelaar J. Sturmann ... Stephen T. Ridgway (Submitted on 15 Jun 2009) Abstract: We directly measured the angular diameters for 11 exoplanet host stars using Georgia State University's CHARA Array interferometer and calculated their linear radii and effective temperatures. The sample tends towards evolving or evolved stars and includes one dwarf, four subgiants, and six giants. We then estimated masses and ages for the stars using our effective temperatures combined with metallicity measurements from the literature.
