In 1968 The Legislature and the Governor's Office approved legislation authorizing the State Police to provide full-time protection to all Constitutional Officers. State Police Officers were trained by the Secret Service giving birth to California's first protective detail. The Wild Bunch Governor's Detail 1985 Top Left: Steve Vasquez, John Mifsud, Jack Brier, Randy Trasvina Bottom Left: Tony Caminiti, Ken Maniord, Jerry Leffingwell, Al Mcbride, Jay Kennedy. When governor Reagan was declared a presidential canidate, he received protection from the United States Secret Service. This protection ended when the Governor lost the nomination. The Governor's Office wanted to continue the same level of professional security that was provided by the service. The Adminstration hired Secret Service Agent, Edward V. Hickey, and appointed him Deputy Director of the State Police. In July of 1968, The California State Police developed a plan for providing full time physical security for then, Governor Ronald Reagan. During his first two years in office, Governor Reagan's travel secretary coordinated all security by contracting with local agencies of the communities that the Governor was visiting.

Straight Dope Message Board Main The Game Room > Your Baseball Team's All-Time "If Only" Team PDA View Full Version : Your Baseball Team's All-Time "If Only" Team Tom Scud 07-16-2009, 04:19 PM This was brought to mind by the "all-franchise team" thread currently active: I was thinking that I could probably put together a better team of players who the Astros had given away than of players who actually played for them. The idea is to come up with the best team of players who were traded away by your team, lost to free agency, or otherwise lost & who subsequently spent their best years with another team.
C: Eddie Taubensee
1B: Phil Nevin
2B: Joe Morgan
3B: Ken Caminiti (technically, played more years with the Astros, but his years in SD were SO much better)
SS: Carlos Guillen
LF: Luis Gonzalez (see Caminiti, Ken)
CF: Kenny Lofton
RF: Steve Finley (see Gonzalez, Luis)
P: Johan Santana (rule 5 draft)
P: Curt Schilling P: Freddy Garcia Tempted to add Randy Johnson, but his all-too-brief stint with the Astros was pretty close to the mid-point of his career. Strangely, I can't think of a single relief pitcher who blossomed after leaving the Astros. Billy Wagner was already good, Octavio Dotel was never the same after he left, Brad Lidge seems to have issues with year-to-year consistency.
