The son of an Italian father and African-American mother, Campy played in the Negro and Mexican leagues before joining the Dodgers soon after Jackie Robinson broke baseballs color line. In each MVP season, he batted over .300, slugged more than 30 home runs and drove in more than 100 runs. He excelled at pitch calling at a time when many believed only whites were smart enough to play catcher. Campy’s autobiography, Its Good to be Alive, recounts his struggle to recover partial mobility in his arms and hands after being paralyzed in an auto accident. AB R H HR RBI AVG

He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His father was of Italian descent; his mother was African American, and so he was barred from Major League Baseball until, in 1947, African-American players were admitted to the major leagues. He played for the Brooklyn Dodgers (now the Los Angeles Dodgers) from 1948 to 1957, as their regular catcher. In 1948 he had three different uniform numbers (33, 39, and 56) before settling down to number 39 for the rest of his career. His first game was on April 20, 1948. He played in the All-Star Game every year from 1949 to 1956. He received the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award in the National League three times: in 1951, 1953, and 1955. He was in tenth place in the MVP voting in 1952.
He became crippled as a result of an auto accident in January 1958 and was confined to a wheelchair.
In 1969 Roy Campanella was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Biography
American athlete, a baseball catcher who led the field in his day. He began his career as a hard-hitting catcher in old Negro Leagues before following Jackie Robinson across the color barrier to join the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1948. He had a World Series triumph in 1955 and was named Most Valuable Player three times. Early in the morning of 1/28/1958, Campanella had an auto accident that left him paralyzed from the waist down. He never lost his boyish enthusiasm and the smile that inspired others. Campanella became a coach in a wheelchair, for nearly two decades the spring-training instructor for the Los Angeles Dodgers. For 35 years, Campanella worked with the handicapped from his wheelchair. After the accident, his marriage dissolved and his house was sold to pay bills. Later, in 1963, he married a former nurse. He doted on his five kids.

Career Batting Record Major league baseball's first black catcher, Campanella began playing professionally when blacks could hardly dream of ever being in the majors. In 1937, he was with the Bacharach Giants, a semi-pro team, but before the season ended he was the starting catcher for the Baltimore Elite Giants of the Negro National League. Like many blacks, he played winter baseball in Latin America while he was with the Giants. Because he had two children, Campanella was granted a draft deferment during World War II. He went to the Mexican League in 1942 but returned to the Giants in 1944. When Branch Rickey of the Brooklyn Dodgers was looking for a black player to integrate major league baseball, Campanella was among those considered. Jackie Robinson, of course, was chosen for that role, but Campanella also signed with the Dodgers soon afterward, in 1946. After two seasons in the minor leagues, Campanella was with the Dodgers briefly at the beginning of the 1948 season. He was sent down to the minors, primarily to integrate the American Association, but was called back up for good after hitting 13 home runs in 35 games. "Campy" played for four pennant winners in Brooklyn and was named the NL's most valuable player in 1951, 1953, and 1955. He hit .325 with 33 homers and 108 RBI in 1951. In 1953, he set a record for catchers with 41 home runs, led the league with 142 RBI, and batted .312. When the Dodgers won their first world championship in 1955, Campanella batted .318 with 32 home runs and 107 RBI.
