The Jose Canseco Countdown to 500 Home Runs
As you may have heard, Jose announced his retirement on May 13th. As a huge Jose fan, I'm hoping it's a temporary retirement. It seems that guys make comebacks all the time these days. I'm sure Jose was completely frustrated with his current situation. And he had a promise from the White Sox that they would trade him to any interested teams besides those in the AL Central or in Wild Card contention. In other words, if the Devil Rays or Blue Jays wanted him, they could have him. Which wasn't likely. My hope is that after a few months off with his daughter Josie, and a little frustration behind him, maybe a contender will call in July or August and hope to sign the big guy. I know Jose would be interested again. And he can show everyone how wrong they were for not signing him. I'm assuming that retirement from a minor league contract would make him a free agent. [But if it is all over.... Thanks Jose. You were great.]
This page is designed to be a calculation of the day that Jose Canseco will hit his 500th career home run. Using Excel and a formula of my own, this page will tabulate Jose's current home run total, and the estimated amount of games until Jose hits number 500. It may not be 100% perfect, but at least it gives a rough idea of how long it'll be until Jose is locked into the Hall of Fame. Below are Jose's career numbers and his home-run-per-game average for each season. [1985 stats are combined with the strike-shortened 1994]

Career Batting Record Canseco played high school baseball in Miami and was chosen by the AL's Oakland Athletics in the 1982 free-agent draft. He joined the major league team late in the 1985 season and was named the league's rookie of the year by The Sporting News and the Baseball Writers Association of America in 1986, his first full season, when he batted only .240 but hit 33 home runs and had 117 RBI. At 6-foot-4 and 240 pounds, Canseco was tremendously strong and hit some mammoth home runs. An opposing player once said of him, "He'll hit the ball, and you'll say there's no way anybody can hit anything that far. Then he'll hit one farther." Despite his size, he was also very fast. In 1988, Canseco became the first player to hit 40 or more home runs and steal 40 or more bases in the same season. His 42 home runs and 124 RBI led the league, and he had a career high .307 batting average to win the AL's most valuable player award. An injury limited him to just 65 games in 1989, but he came back with 37 home runs and 101 RBI in 1990, then led the league in home runs for a second time with 44 in 1991, when he had 122 RBI.

32. Current Biography Excerpts: Baseball
CANSECO, JOSE (kanSAY-koh, hoh-SAY) July 2, 1964- Baseball player. Perhaps the most feared hitter in baseball is Jose Canseco, the right fielder of the Oakland Athletics.

Sep. 19, 1967- Baseball player. Jim Abbott is one of an elite group of major-league pitchers to have thrown a no-hitter, a feat he accomplished while he was a New York Yankee in 1993. Abbott, who began the 1995 season as a member of the Chicago White Sox and ended it as a California Angel, is also among the few hurlers whose fastballs have been clocked at over ninety miles an hour. What makes his success all the more remarkable is the fact that he plays ball without a right hand. He was born with a rounded stub at the end of his right arm, with one small, finger-like protrusion where his right hand should be. He pitches with his left hand, with the palm of his glove resting on the stub. After each pitch, he quickly switches the glove to his left hand, so that he can catch or field balls thrown or hit back. Prior to becoming a major-league pitcher, Abbott was an Olympic gold medalist, a collegiate baseball all-star, and a high-school standout in three sports. The complete article can be found on the Current Biography CD-ROM and in the 1995 Current Biography Yearbook.
