Giuseppe and Rosalie DiMaggio
As a young man, Giuseppe DiMaggio, Joe DiMaggio's father, was a fisherman on a small island off the coast of Sicily. Like so many other immigrants coming into the United States, it was economic hardship that convinced him to leave his village and set sail for opportunity in the United States.
Like many other Sicilians, Giuseppe chose the San Francisco area, which offered good fishing possibilities and a climate roughly comparable to southern Italy. Giuseppe followed his father-in-law over, and worked for 10 cents an hour for the railroads. By 1904, he had saved enough money to bring his young wife Rosalie and their first child to America.
Giuseppe and Rosalie spoke Italian in the home. Like so many other immigrant children, the second generation DiMaggios spoke Italian at home and English outside their home.
At first Giuseppe frowned upon baseball, considering it a frivolous endeavor for his boys. "What the old man wanted, what he really wanted, was for Joe to get an education, to make something of himself, to make a living, to get away from the struggle, the poverty we had as kids," remembers Tom, the oldest DiMaggio brother. "That’s why he didn’t want him to play baseball. He didn’t think he could make any money at it."

Biography
American athlete, considered one of the greatest outfielders in baseball history. He played in 10 World Series and 11 major league All-star games. His 56-game winning streak endures as one of the most remarkable records in baseball. He came to the Yankees in 1936 as a gawky, toothy high school dropout, but by the time he left the game, retiring on 12/12/1951, he had become baseball's exemplar of grace. The eighth of nine kids born to a fisherman and a housewife, he was a baby when the family moved to San Francisco. He was so tongue-tied that his sisters thought him slow-witted, and in school, he never read and never said a word. At 16, he simply stopped going to school. He sold papers, making two or three bucks on a good day which he took home. Jobs were not plentiful in the early '30s and he worked where he could get it.. He never fished, stringently avoiding his father's life. But he could play ball; how he could smack that ball! By 18, he had a contract with the San Francisco Seals, minor league ball before becoming a rookie with the New York Yankees, making his debut on 5/03/1936. By the time he was 21, he was a star, the toast of New York and a hero to Italian-Americans across the country. He bought his family a big new house and invested in a restaurant that his older brother could run. Over the next 15 years he led the Yanks to nine world championships, winning three Most Valuable Player awards and setting one of baseball's most enduring records with an epic 56-game hitting streak that started on 5/15/1941.

Joe DiMaggio
© New York Daily News Order this book below. Born: November 25, 1914 Martinez, California Died: March 8, 1999 Hollywood, California Joe DiMaggio was the eighth child out of nine to be born to his parents Giuseppe and Rosalie DiMaggio. They were a Sicilian couple who immigrated to the United States at the turn of the century. Joe DiMaggio threw and batted right and was nicknamed the Yankee Clipper. He had an interesting childhood which consisted of him dropping out of high school in 1930 and taking on many odd jobs while spending every chance he got playing baseball. He bottled orange juice, labored at the docks, worked at a cannery, delivered groceries, and loaded trucks. Finally, in 1933, on a recommendation from his older brother Vince, DiMaggio played his first full season of baseball with the San Francisco Seals, a minor league team from the Pacific Coast League. He had a 61-game hitting streak his first year. The following year, in 1934, the Seals owner sold DiMaggio to the New York Yankees for $25,000 and five players. What followed was a slew of broken records beginning with his rookie year and ending with his retirement.
