[Login to edit this page] Over four consecutive American League Championship Series from 1971-74, he hit five home runs in 17 games, including two in a 1973 game and a solo shot in Game 3 of the 1974 ALCS, a 1-0 victory. Playing almost exclusively at third base in Oakland, Bando played every infield position while with the Brewers, even making one appearance as a relief pitcher in a 1979 game. After retiring, Bando became a front office executive with the team. He was named the Brewers' general manager on October 8, 1991. For a variety of reasons (including low payroll, bad free agent signings and poor amateur drafts) Bando managed to build only one winning team in seven plus years as GM. That team, the 1992 Brewers, was largely composed of players he inherited from his predecessor Harry Dalton. They ended the season with 92 wins and 70 losses under the only manager Bando ever hired in his tenure as GM, Phil Garner, his former teammate in Oakland. One of the lowlights of his tenure happened after that 1992 season, when the club did not offer Paul Molitor salary arbitration until the 11th hour. Molitor signed a free-agent deal with the Toronto Blue Jays. At the time, Bando was quoted as disparaging Molitor as "only a (designated hitter)". The following season, Molitor was named the World Series MVP as the Blue Jays won their second championship. This was noted by some as one of the worst public relations blunders in Brewers history, although Bando has since claimed that his words were taken out of context.

Example of auction Fingers, Rollie Born in 1946 in Ohio, Roland Fingers earned fame as a Major League Baseball relief pitcher in the 1970s and 80s. Debuting in the major leagues in 1968, Fingers is known for redefining the role of the closer in baseball: it was because of his performance that it has become widely accepted that an excellent pitcher might best serve his team as a closer, instead of as a third or fourth starter. During his career, which lasted nearly two decades, he played for the Oakland Athletics, the San Diego Padres, and the Milwaukee Brewers before retiring from the game in 1985. Fingers earned numerous awards, titles, and honors while in the MLB, among then seven All-Star selections, the Cy Young Award, the MVP title, three World Series Championships, and the 1974 World Series MVP title. He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1992. There are no auctions currently scheduled for this athlete Athlete Bios Current Auctions by Athletes HOME ART AUCTIONS ... Rollie Fingers emerged as the game's first modern-day relief ace, achieving legendary status with consistent excellence coming out of the bullpen. He relied upon a sinking fastball to notch 341 saves, becoming the all-time major league leader in that category. Fingers also appeared in 16 World Series games for the Oakland A's, winning 2 games and saving 6 in 7 chances. In 1972, Fingers appeared in 6 of the 7 games, compiled 10 1/3 IP, allowing just 4 hits and 2 ER; he also gained 2 saves in 2 chances. In the decisive seventh game against the Reds, Fingers worked out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the eighth inning to preserve the 3-2 victory and the championship. In 1973, he appeared in 6 of the 7 games again, gathering 13 2/3 innings and allowing just one earned run. Again he was the Game 7 hero, shutting down the Mets in the decider with 3 2/3 innings and preserving a 4-1 lead. In 1974, the Athletics won the Series in five games against the Dodgers; Fingers won Game 1, blew a save in Game 3, then saved Games 4 and 5 to clinch the title.

STATE FINGERS ROLLIE AS #1 TAX DEADBEAT
special for the readers of milwaukeeworld
By Michael Horne
[Update: 12 January 2007 Rollie Fingers has posted a response on his blog to this website's mention about his tax status. He headlined the item, "Breaking News: Milwaukee Brewers confirm that state taxes were withheld from all of Rollie Fingers (sic) paychecks."
This apparently proves something, according to Fingers, who says "The Brewers went through the archeives (sic) and found that every paycheck issued to Rollie Fingers while he was a member of the Brewers had state income taxes withheld."
So what? Did Rollie also have taxes withheld from his non-Brewer income? That might be an issue for a guy who spent months of his life signing balls and baseball cards at fairs and events. That money counts as income, too.
Fingers goes on to complain that he can not "get through to anyone at the State Franchise Board in Wisconsin," perhaps because it does not exist. If we pretend that he means the Department of Revenue, then he asks of them: "I wonder what they have to say about this lastest (sic) fact. I mean how does anyone owe 3 times the amount of state tax in any one year than they actually made the whole year."

Roland Glen "Rollie" Fingers (born August 25 ) is a former relief pitcher in Major League Baseball for the Oakland Athletics San Diego Padres (1977-80) and Milwaukee Brewers ). In addition to his pitching ability, he was noted for his handlebar moustache which he originally grew to get a $300 bonus from Athletics owner Charles O. Finley . He was born in Steubenville, Ohio . When Fingers reached the major leagues, the role of relief pitchers was limited, as starting pitchers rarely left games while holding a lead; but as team offense increased following the season, and especially with the American League's introduction of the designated hitter in , managers became more willing to replace starters in the late innings with a lead in order to forestall any late rallies by opponents. Through the , both leagues' annual saves leaders tended toward totals of 20-25 saves; few pitchers remained in the role more than a two or three years, with significant exceptions such as knuckleballer Hoyt Wilhelm and the diminutive Roy Face . But in the , in an era allowing for greater opportunities for closers Sparky Lyle and Goose Gossage Dennis Eckersley and John Smoltz permanent role of closer, with no plans to bring them back to the rotation.
