Fisk waved it fair
By Mike Puma

Signature Game
Oct. 21, 1975 -
The sixth game of the World Series belonged to Carlton Fisk, but even before his at-bat in the 12th inning, there was plenty of drama. The Cincinnati Reds rallied from a 3-0 deficit and were four outs away from the world championship when Boston's Bernie Carbo pinch-hit a three-run homer into Fenway Park's centerfield bleachers to tie the game 6-6 in the eighth inning. The Red Sox had a chance to win in the ninth, but blew a bases-loaded, nobody-out situation. When Pete Rose came to the plate in the 11th, he said to Fisk, "This is some kind of game, isn't it?" Fisk replied, "Some kind of game." It got even better. That inning, Boston's Dwight Evans robbed Joe Morgan, preserving the tie with a sensational catch against the rightfield seats and starting a double play. Leading off the bottom of the 12th, Fisk launched a long drive down the leftfield line off Pat Darcy. Worried that the ball might go foul, he furiously waved his hands for the ball to stay fair. It did, ricocheting off the foul pole. Boston's 7-6 victory evened the Series at three games apiece. "I made sure I touched every base," Fisk said. "Even if I had to straight-arm people or knock them down, I made sure I touched every bit of white I saw out there."

"I just told him [Deion Sanders] I thought that there was a right way and a wrong way to play the game, and he was playing it wrong, because it offended guys like me. And if he didn't care to play it right, let's go at it, right here at home plate," says Carlton Fisk on ESPN Classic's SportsCentury series. Carlton Fisk, who hit one of the most memorable home runs in World Series history, a dramatic shot in the '75 Series, will be profiled on Friday, October 21 at 3:30 p.m. ET. He's often said that the smartest thing he did in baseball was become a catcher. The mask and glove were never tools of ignorance for Carlton Fisk. Nicknamed "Pudge" in his youth because of his stocky build, he emerged as not only one of the best catchers of his era, but as one of the best ever. Fisk played 24 seasons in the majors, retiring as baseball's all-time leader in games caught with 2,226 and in home runs by a catcher with 351. (He lost the latter record in 2004 when Mike Piazza passed him). Fisk's .269 lifetime batting average with 376 homers and 1,330 RBI are proof that he could do more than call a good game.

Known by the nickname "Pudge" due to his 6'2", 220 lb frame, he was the first player to be unanimously voted American League Rookie of the Year (1972). He is best known for "waving fair" his game-winning home run in the 12th inning of Game 6 of the 1975 World Series , one of the greatest moments in World Series history. At the time of his retirement in 1993 he held the records for most home runs all-time by a catcher with 351 (since passed by Mike Piazza ). A testament to his durability behind the plate, Fisk held the record for most games played at the position of catcher (2,226) until June 17, 2009 when he was surpassed by another "Pudge,"

Carlton Fisk caught more games than any other player in baseball history. He hit the most home runs as a catcher. He was Rookie of the Year in 1972, the first to be chosen unanimously. He won a Gold Glove award the same year. He played 23 years in the majors, and was chosen to the All-Star game in eleven of those seasons. His .481 slugging average ranks as the 10th best in Red Sox history. In the summer of 2000, he was inducted into the National Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. October 21, 1975 Listen to the home run call! The 1975 World Series pitted the Red Sox against Cincinnati's Big Red Machine. Carlton Fisk, Dwight Evans, Fred Lynn, Carl Yastrzemski, Luis Tiant, and Bill Lee faced off against Pete Rose, Johnny Bench, Joe Morgan, Tony Perez, Dave Concepcion, and Ken Griffey for one of the most exciting series in history. The Red Sox won the opener 6-0 behind the pitching of Luis Tiant. El Tiante held the Reds scoreless, and the Sox scored six runs in the bottom of the seventh to take a 1-0 series lead. The next night, Bill Lee held Cincinnati to one run for eight innings, but the Reds scored twice in the ninth to take the game 3-2 and even the series at one game apiece. Cincinnati won the third game, 6-5. The game saw six home runs, including one by pinch-hitter Bernie Carbo, and a controversial play, in which a clear case of catcher's interference was called an error and led to the winning run. In Game 4, Tiant threw another complete game, using 163 pitches and beating the Reds 5-4. The next night Cincinnati won, 6-2. After having a day off to travel to Boston, the series was delayed three more days by rain.
