James Emory Foxx (October 22, 1907 – July 21, 1967) was an American first baseman in Major League Baseball who is widely regarded as one of the greatest right-handed power hitters to ever play the sport. Foxx was the second major league player to hit 500 career home runs, and, at 32 years, 336 days old, is still the youngest ever to reach that mark. Foxx was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1951. Nicknamed "Double X" and "The Beast" by the press, stories of Foxx's powerful blasts existed in almost every American League park. He once hit a ball thrown by Vernon Gomez of the Yankees into the upper left-field stands of

Born in 1907 and raised in Sudlersville Queen Annes County , Foxx first gained local notoriety by starring in track and baseball while still in high school. At age 15 he was discovered by former major leaguer Frank "Home Run" Baker, who at the time was managing a minor league team in Easton. Purportedly Baker felt young Foxx had major league potential because the youngster was so strong that he could lift a bale of hay with each hand. After a stay of less than two years in the minor leagues, at age seventeen Foxx was promoted to the Philadelphia Athletics in the major leagues. Connie Mack, the owner and manager of the Athletics, converted Jimmie Foxx from a catcher to a first baseman, and after several years as a reserve, Foxx became a regular by 1928. The 1930s were the prime years of Foxx's career as he garnered most valuable player awards in 1932, 1933 and 1938. During that decade he led the league in batting (1933 and 1938) and in home runs on four occasions (1932, 1933, 1935 and 1939). His efforts were rewarded with a Most Valuable Player award in 1933 as a result of a .356 batting average, 48 home runs and 163 runs batted in. Tales of Foxx's power bordered on the mythological. He was said to have hit a baseball out of Chicago's Comiskey Park, where the outfield seats were configured in a double-decker layout. An equally impressive tale concerning Yankee Stadium held that one of Foxx's home runs actually broke a seat in the outfield. In all, Foxx drove in at least one hundred runs in thirteen seasons during his career.

Career Batting Record Foxx was 6-foot and 195 pounds, but he seemed bigger, probably because he could hit the ball so far. He joined the AL's Philadelphia Athletics in 1925 as a catcher, but didn't play much during his first few seasons because Philadelphia already had the best catcher in baseball, Mickey Cochrane. In his infrequent appearances, Foxx showed that he could hit, and in 1929 he became Philadelphia's starting first baseman. He hit .354 with 33 home runs and 117 RBI. It was the first in a record streak of twelve years in which he hit 30 or more home runs and drove in 100 or more runs. Foxx had a .335 average with 37 home runs and 156 RBI in 1930, then batted .291 with 30 homers and 120 RBI in 1931, as the Athletics won their third straight pennant. In their three World Series appearances, Foxx hit .344, with 4 home runs, 11 runs scored, and 11 RBI. Philadelphia owner-manager Connie Mack began to dismantle the team in 1932 because of financial problems. The Athletics started to slide, but Foxx didn't. He led the AL with 58 home runs and 169 RBI, batting .364. Foxx lost two home runs that were hit in games called by rain before they became official, which kept him from tying Babe Ruth's famous record of 60 in a season. He was also deprived of the triple crown because the batting title was awarded to Dale Alexander, even though Alexander didn't have the required 400 at-bats for the season.
