Hank Greenberg's career statistics

The first "Hammerin' Hank"
By Nick Acocella
Special to ESPN.com
"When Hank began playing in the minor leagues, a player from the South said, 'Hank, people tell me you're Jewish, but I can't believe it.' Hank said, 'Why?' And the other player said, "Because I heard that all Jews have horns in their head, like the devil,' " says Hank Greenberg's biographer, Ira Berkow, on ESPN Classic's SportsCentury series.
For most of his career Hank Greenberg was presumed to be carrying the fate of the Jewish people on his shoulders. That the Detroit Tigers star ranked only below Jimmie Foxx as his era's top righthanded American League slugger has suggested to some that he might have been second to nobody if he had had to worry only about opposing pitchers. Hank Greenberg hit 58 homers in 1938 two shy of Babe Ruth's then record of 60. Greenberg took his first step toward the Hall of Fame when he batted .339 with 39 homers, 139 RBI and a major league-leading 63 doubles in 1934. It was also near the end of this season that his Jewishness became an issue on the sports pages when he consulted a rabbi about whether he should play on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Mindful of the pennant race between the Tigers and New York Yankees, the rabbi struck a compromise for the September games. He said it was okay for Greenberg to play on the happy occasion of the Jewish New Year (Rosh Hashanah) but dedicate himself to prayer on the more somber day of atonement (Yom Kippur). Greenberg acquiesced, and responded with two homers that gave Detroit a 2-1 victory on the first holiday.

Hank Greenberg played less than 10 full seasons in the Major Leagues, but he certainly made a statement. He was the first Jewish player not to hide his ethnic background. He was one of the first baseball players to leave the game to enlist in the service in World War II. He earned an MVP at first base and then, after switching positions, earned one while he was playing left field.. Greenberg was a massive player for his time, standing 6'4 and weighing 215 pounds. The son of Jewish immigrants, Greenberg graduated from a high school in the Bronx and played one semester for New York University. He had a tryout with the New York Giants, but manager John McGraw thought Greenberg was too clumsy. Despite this rejection, Greenberg received lucrative offers from the Yankees and the Senators. With the Yankees, Greenberg saw little future as a first baseman if he had to wait to play behind Lou Gehrig. He turned down both those offers and signed with the Detroit Tigers in 1930. He appeared in one game that season for the Tigers, picking up a single at-bat.

Greenberg was Tiger at the plate
By Nick Acocella
Special to ESPN.com
Signature Game
Sept. 30, 1945 -
Hank Greenberg had been back with Detroit only three months after four years in the military. Going into today's final day of the season, the first-place Tigers were one game ahead of the Washington Senators, who had already finished their schedule. The Tigers had to win just one game of their doubleheader against the St. Louis Browns to clinch the pennant. A Browns sweep, and there would be a tie. On a dark, rainy day in Sportsman's Park in St. Louis, the Browns took a 3-2 lead into the ninth inning of the opener. With Tigers on second and third and one out, St. Louis manager Luke Sewell decided to intentionally walk Doc Cramer, who was hitting .275, and face Greenberg with the bases loaded. Greenberg, though, spoiled Sewell's strategy when he rocked a 1-0 pitch from Nels Potter into the leftfield seats for a grand slam and the American League pennant for the Tigers with their 6-3 victory. Odds 'n' Ends
  • Greenberg lacked coordination as a youngster and flat feet prevented him from running fast. But he worked diligently to overcome his inadequacies and he became a basketball standout in high school, helping James Monroe win the city championship.

    Hank Greenberg
Before television made professional football so popular, baseball was America's only national pastime and a symbol of such American values as competition and fair play. Jews, African-Americans and other "outsiders" were not easily welcomed into the sport. This year marks the 50th anniversary of Jackie Robinson's breaking the major league color barrier. A decade earlier, Hank Greenberg crossed a different line: He became baseball's first Jewish superstar. Henry Benjamin Greenberg was born in an Orthodox household in 1911. By the time he reached high school in the Bronx, Greenberg stood 6'3" and was an All-City athlete in soccer and basketball, but his favorite sport was baseball. Somewhat awkward in the field, Greenberg chose first base as his position. In 1929, Greenberg was offered a contract by the New York Yankees but turned it down because the immortal iron man Lou Gehrig was the incumbent Yankee first baseman. Instead, after spending a year at New York University, Greenberg signed a contract with the Detroit Tigers. Greenberg spent three years in the minor leagues, working hard each day to improve his fielding and hitting. After being named Most Valuable Player in the Texas League, he was promoted to the Tigers in 1933, batting .301 and driving in 87 runs.

Hank Greenberg (1911-1986) Henry Benjamin Greenberg was born in New York City on January 1, 1911. In 1925, 14 year old Greenberg was a player on the Washington Avenue Annex Settlement House baseball team, which won the Bronx championship. Years later, Greenberg won a scholarship to New York University, but he quit after his first term to play baseball full time. Hank joined the Detroit Tigers in 1933 as a first baseman, and helped them win their first American League pennant in 25 years. The Tigers were champions again the following year, and Hank won the American League's Most Valuable Player award by a unanimous vote of the Baseball Writers Association; he won it again in 1940 after he had been switched to left field. After Hank Greenberg declined to play in an important game on Yom Kippur in 1934, Edgar Guest published a poem, the last lines of which are: "We shall miss him on the infield and shall miss him at the bat, but he's true to his religion - and I honor him for that."
