Remembering Greenberg
He batted for the Tigers, himself and American Jews.

In late September 1934, Hank Greenberg, the great Detroit Tigers slugger, chose not to play a crucial game against the Yankees so that he could observe Yom Kippur. A hero to Detroit's Jewish community in only his second season, Greenberg's appearance at Shaarey Zedek synagogue moved the congregants to burst into applause as four rabbis prayed. "Here was this Jewish fella, walking into the synagogue," Bert Gordon, a fan, recalls in"The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg," a new documentary by Aviva Kempner. "Six feet four!My God, nobody had never seen a Jew that big. Everybody was 5 foot 5, 5 foot 6!"The Tigers lost the game, 5-2, yet won the American League pennant. But Greenberg's decision to honor his heritage galvanized his bond with Jews. "The Jewish people,"Bud Shaver wrote in The Detroit Times, "could have no finer representative." Aviva Kempner and her brother, Jonathan, knew of Greenberg from their father, Harold, who left Lithuania for Pittsburgh in 1925 and settled in Detroit. To Harold Kempner, baseball was a ritual of American assimilation and Greenberg a symbol. As SenatorCarl Levin, Democrat of Michigan, puts it in the film, Greenberg "validated that thiswas the land of opportunity: look, we could even play baseball!" So each year, Harold Kempner reminded his children that Greenberg sat on Yom Kippur. "I thought Hank Greenberg was part of the Kol Nidre liturgy," Ms. Kempner, now 53, said in a recent interview.

FROM FARM BOY TO CEO Greenberg was born in New York City but grew up on a New York dairy farm in the hamlet of Swan Lake. He lied about his age to join the U.S. Army during World War II, became an Army Ranger, and stormed the beach at Normandy. After the war he attended the University of Miami, where he majored in prelaw, and then New York Law School, where he earned his LLB in 1950. He was just embarking on a career in law when the Korean War broke out; he soon found himself back in the service stationed in South Korea, eventually rising to the rank of captain and receiving a Bronze Star, an award given for heroic or meritorious service. PERIOD OF EXCEPTIONAL GROWTH In response to the changing needs of corporate America, Greenberg led AIG to be among the first companies to establish risk-management services for large companies. In 1979 and 1980 AIG became the first Western insurance organization to establish joint ventures with foreign countries, including Hungary, Poland, Romania, and China. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s Greenberg also organized or acquired various specialized entities focusing on such areas as aviation insurance, vocational and rehabilitation services, mortgage-guaranty insurance, and managed health care.

Career Batting Record A right-handed first baseman, Greenberg put up some amazing RBI figures during his career and once challenged Babe Ruth's record of 60 home runs in a season. The 6-foot-3 1/2, 210-pound Greenberg starred in basketball as well as baseball in high school, then signed a contract with the Detroit Tigers that allowed him to enter New York University in 1929. However, he left school in the spring of 1930 to pursue his baseball career. Greenberg had just one at-bat with the Tigers that year and didn't rejoin the team until 1933, when he became a starter. He led the AL in doubles with 63 in 1934, when he hit .339 with 26 home runs and 139 RBI to help lead the Tigers into the World Series. Despite Greenberg's .321 average and 7 RBI, Detroit lost to the St. Louis Cardinals. He was named the league's most valuable player in 1935. He hit .328 that season and led the league with 36 home runs and 170 RBI. The Tigers won the World Series, but Greenberg suffered a broken wrist in the second game. The wrist was broken again early in the 1936 season and Greenberg appeared in only 12 games. However, he came back with 40 home runs and 183 RBI, one short of Lou Gehrig's AL record, in 1937 and the following year he hit 58 home runs to tie Jimmy Foxx's record for a right-handed hitter.
