Henry Benjamin "Hank" Greenberg January 1 September 4 ), nicknamed "Hammerin' Hank", was an American player in Major League Baseball Born in New York City , Greenberg was not the first Jewish man to play major-league baseball. But by the end of his career he had become by far the best Jewish player ever, and the first major Jewish star. Only Sandy Koufax has had similar success among Jewish players in the 50 years since Greenberg has retired. Greenberg was subject to the most vicious ethnic taunting seen in the sport prior to the arrival of Jackie Robinson in , Greenberg nevertheless became a first-rank ballplayer and an icon among Jews in the United States. Maurice R. Greenberg
Chip East/Pool via Bloomberg News Updated: April 21, 2010 Maurice R. Greenberg was the chairman of the American International Group from 1968 to 2005, during which time he built the small insurance company into what became the world's largest insurance and financial services corporation. In 2005, Mr. Greenberg was forced out after an accounting fraud investigation by Eliot Spitzer, then New York attorney general, cast a cloud over his leadership. All the criminal charges were eventually dropped, though some civil charges were still unresolved. And in August 2009, Mr. Greenberg agreed to a deal with the Securities and Exchange Commission to pay $15 million in penalties and disgorgement for overseeing fraudulent transactions at A.I.G. The transactions led to an accounting restatement by A.I.G. of at least $2 billion, but Mr. Greenberg said the vast majority of the restatement "was unnecessary." Shortly after agreeing to settle, he issued a statement saying he had "no responsibility" for the fraud. During his time at A.I.G., Mr. Greenberg also controlled a privately held company, Starr International, which held a key block of A.I.G. shares, and he remained chairman of the firm after his ouster from A.I.G. The two companies sued each other in 2005, with A.I.G. contending that Mr. Greenberg's company had plundered $4.3 billion in stock from a trust that A.I.G. said was set up to pay its own top performers. A.I.G. further claimed that Mr. Greenberg had cashed out the stock and was using the proceeds as seed money for other business ventures. But in July 2009, a federal jury rejected A.I.G.'s claims. In a second, advisory decision, the jury found that Mr. Greenberg's company had not breached a duty of trust to A.I.G. A federal judge who presided over the trial later upheld the finding.
