Snowdrop
Botanical: Galanthus nivalis (LINN.)
Family: N.O. Amaryllidaceae
-Synonyms- Fair Maid of February. Bulbous Violet. Snowdrop, usually spoken of as the first flower of our year, though the Winter Aconite has perhaps a better title to be so considered, has never been of much account in physic, and has never been recognized. Gerard says 'nothing is set down hereof by the ancient Writers, nor anything observed by the moderne.' He calls it the Bulbous Violet, but adds that some call it the Snowdrop, the earliest mention of it by this name, and it was known to all the old botanists as a bulbous violet. The generic name, Galanthus , is Greek in its origin and signifies Milkflower. Nivalis is a Latin adjective, meaning relating to or resembling snow. Gerard speaks of it as not a native of England, though somewhat common in gardens, having been introduced from Italy. It is a native of Switzerland, Austria and of Southern Europe generally, but where naturalized here spreads into considerable masses, and is plentiful wherever it occurs, generally growing in shady pastures, woods and orchards. There is probably no bulbous plant, however, which for all its extreme hardiness in resisting cold, shows such a marked preference or distaste for certain localities, even though there may be little variation in soil or altitude. In some districts snowdrops will grow and spread in woods as readily as the wild hyacinth; in others, with apparently identical conditions, it is difficult to get them to grow and they will refuse to spread.

Steadman Shorter's Medical Dictionary Digitalis
Botanical: Digitalis purpurea (LINN.)
Family: N.O. Scrophulariaceae
-Synonyms- Witches' Gloves. Dead Men's Bells. Fairy's Glove. Gloves of Our Lady. Bloody Fingers. Virgin's Glove. Fairy Caps. Folk's Glove. Fairy Thimbles.
Norwegian ) Revbielde.
German ) Fingerhut.
-Part Used- Leaves.
-Habitat- The Common Foxglove of the woods ( Digitalis purpurea ), perhaps the handsomest of our indigenous plants, is widely distributed throughout Europe and is common as a wild-flower in Great Britain, growing freely in woods and lanes, particularly in South Devon, ranging from Cornwall and Kent to Orkney, but not occurring in Shetland, or in some of the eastern counties of England. It flourishes best in siliceous soil and grows well in loam, but is entirely absent from some calcareous districts, such as the chain of the Jura, and is also not found in the Swiss Alps. It occurs in Madeira and the Azores, but is, perhaps, introduced there. The genus contains only this one indigenous species, though several are found on the Continent. Needing little soil, it is found often in the crevices of granite walls, as well as in dry hilly pastures, rocky places and by roadsides. Seedling Foxgloves spring up rapidly from recently-turned earth. Turner (1548), says that it grows round rabbitholes freely.

On January 1, 1996, Tribble "Tribby-Dog", a grumpy 18-pound longhair tabby cat lost a short, but hard-fought battle against the odds. For nearly 13 years, he was a really good friend. Perhaps the best friend anyone could ever hope to have, human or animal.
Never having felt the pain of pet loss, the days and weeks following Tribble's death could only be described as pure grief. It's the kind of pain non animal lovers could never understand, and one that some people in today's society refuse to even acknowledge.
This website is called Lightning Strike Pet Loss Support because I hope it provides "lightning-fast" pet loss support for pet lovers grieving over the death of a pet, a dying pet, sick pet, or lost pet...no matter if they walk, crawl, fly, hop, or swim our great earth.

Tim Sloan, AFP/Getty Images Petside: Pet Semetery " may be a scary movie, but the idea of pets roaming around cemeteries is getting attention right now, and not just because it's nearly Halloween. More dog owners are letting their dogs go off-leash in cemeteries , causing some uproar from city government officials and citizens about dog waste near and on graves.
However, one cemetery in Washington, D.C. has found a unique solution to this problem: charging dog walkers an annual fee and requiring volunteer services in return for off-leash privileges.

You're not alone, for we are here, We'll go that extra mile, And when your life is easier, We'll help you learn to smile!! (author unknown) Most parents expect to outlive their children, so when the child dies first, (regardless of whether it is a baby, a child, a teenager or an adult), they struggle to make sense out of something that defies logic. They may feel bewildered and alone, and they may struggle to survive. The Grieving Parents [GP] e-mail support group was created for parents whose children have died. It is intended to be a safe place where parents can discuss the lives and deaths of their children with other parents who are also grieving.
