William "Dummy" Hoy
Dummy Hoy was a deaf baseball player. He was born in 1862 and died in 1961. His nickname is "Dummy" Hoy; his real name is William E. Hoy. The Oshkosh Club of the Northwestern League gave him the name "Dummy" because he couldn't hear. He was the first deaf Major League baseball player. He played baseball for 17 years, from 1886 to 1903. He invented the signal of strikes and balls because he could not hear the umpire shouting if it was a strike or not. Raising one hand means strike. If the umpire just said nothing, it means a ball. Dummy Hoy needed to know if it was a strike or a ball. Gallaudet University, which is a deaf college dedicated their on-campus baseball field to William "Dummy" Hoy, on April 8, 2001. The baseball field’s name is "Hoy Field." Dummy Hoy played 1,784 games and had a .292 average in 17 years of baseball. He died of a stroke at the age of 99.

[Login to edit this page] Deaf at birth from rubella, Pride developed oral skills early in his life and graduated from John F. Kennedy High School in Silver Spring, Maryland. He excelled in baseball, basketball and soccer in high school. After high school, Pride attended the College of William and Mary. He did not play baseball in college, but was the starting point guard on the basketball team. He also was an excellent soccer player who played for the United States at the 1985 FIFA U-16 World Championship in China (1985), scored two goals in the tournament, including the match winner against Bolivia. He was named one of the top 15 youth prospects in the world for that year. Pride uses his 5% residual hearing to help him speak and is a fluent lip-reader. Pride was originally signed by the New York Mets, but reached the major leagues with Montreal. At that time, he became the first deaf player in the majors since Dick Sipek in 1945. A left-handed hitter, with good plate discipline, some power, and considerable speed, he never played regularly in the majors. Instead, he pinch hit or played in the outfield, usually left or right, as an injury replacement, and is regarded as an excellent fielder with a strong arm. Pride signed with the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs of the independent Atlantic League on April 15, 2008. He was released by the Blue Crabs on August 23.

Corewars for Dummies
Core Wars for Dummies;
an introduction and tutorial. Introduction: This document will attempt to explain Core Wars in general, so that the first time player may gain an understanding of Corewars and can begin to write Redcode. My introduction to Core Wars was through Scientific American. Articles there described a game played in a virtual computer. Competing programs attempted to "kill" each other. The programs were written in a language called Redcode. At first glance Redcode appears hard to decipher, but with a little bit of knowledge the programs yield up an abundance of information. That knowledge is written here. Let's take a look at some basic concepts. The Core:
Instructions: There are currently 17 instructions used in Redcode. This number has changed as the games has evolved. Each instruction has a three letter code (an example would the MOV for move.) They are listed below in no particular order. DAT data MOV move ADD add SUB subtract MUL multiply DIV divide MOD modula (remainder of division) JMP jump JMZ jump if zero JMN jump if not zero DJN decrement, jump if not zero SPL split execution SLT skip if less than CMP compare (see SEQ) SEQ skip if equal SNE skip if not equal NOP no operation An in-depth explanation of each instruction (also called Opcodes) appears later. Suffice it to say that each instruction contains an "A" field and a "B" field. These fields tell MARS how to execute the instruction.

Sports and the Deaf:

Sports and the Deaf
I recently attended a high school basketball game . One of the team members on the other team was deaf . I was very interested since this player was one of my former students; also, I had worked with the interpreter for several years a few years ago. I was fascinated to see how these two worked together. I also watched the coach and all team members adapt communication The interpreter watched carefully, understood all the plays, and knew exactly where to be. If there was a time out, she was either next to the coach, signing, or directly across from the deaf athlete, signing. When the deaf student was playing, she positioned herself on side lines in his direct line of view and signed information the coach was giving. The student's eyes were always moving. Not only did he have to watch the game, his teammates, his opponents, the person he was guarding, and all the other things basketball players must be aware of; but he also had to keep looking to the interpreter and the coach for additional information others could hear. I could not see any excuses made for this team member. He made baskets, got rebounds, guarded zone or opponents as called for, attended to time out instructions, communicated with his teammates on the floor, and his coach on the sidelines. The team had developed some very subtle manual cues to assist not only in communication, but in "
