By Rob Olds Career Achievements Cy Young - '63, '65, '66 NL MVP - 1963 Pitching Triple Crown - '63, '65, '66 All-Star - 1961-66 Like many other power pitchers, Sandy Koufax had problems harnessing his tremendous talents at the beginning of his career. Through the first six years of his career, Koufax had a record of 36-38. But, during a spring training game in 1961, Dodger catcher Norm Sherry told Koufax to slow down and to try not to throw his fastball quite so hard. The rest, as they say, is history. The 1961 season saw Koufax dominate the N.L. with an 18-13 record and a league leading 269 strikeouts in 255 innings. The Dodger fireballer went 14-7 with an ERA of 2.54 in 1962, including his first career no-hitter on June 30 of that year, before an injury forced him to end his season early. In 1963, Koufax became the most dominant pitcher in baseball, winning 25 games and losing only 5 (and his first Cy Young Award) with an ERA of 1.88, 306 strikeouts in 311 innings, and 11 shutouts, while holding opponents to a meager .189 batting average.

Sandy Koufax's career statistics

Koufax's dominance was short but sweet
By Larry Schwartz
Special to ESPN.com
"Sandy would strike me out two or three times a game. And I knew every pitch he was going to throw fastball, breaking ball or whatever. Actually, he would let you look at it. And you still couldn't hit it," says Hall of Fame center fielder Willie Mays about Sandy Koufax on ESPN Classic's SportsCentury series. If one were to put music to a career, the dominant notes in Sandy Koufax's would most effectively be reached with violins. For Babe Ruth, bass drums. For Ted Williams, a snarl of brass and woodwinds. But for Koufax, violins bittersweet and vaguely ambiguous, like gypsy music. The impression of Koufax persists of him being the J.D. Salinger of baseball. Koufax was an elegant craftsman, brilliant to the extreme in the exercise of his talent, but an obsessively reluctant celebrity, less comfortable in the limelight than in the hermit-like world he fashioned for himself off the pitcher's mound. Like Salinger, the author of the classic
