7. Mickey Mantle - Bob Costas Eulogy
The sportscaster fondly remembers the man who defined baseball for his generation.

BOB COSTAS EULOGY
www.mickey-mantle.com You know, it occurs to me as we're all sitting here thinking of Mickey, he's probably somewhere getting an earful from Casey Stengel, and no doubt quite confused by now. One of Mickey's fondest wishes was that he be remembered as a great teammate, to know that the men he played with thought well of him. But it was more than that. Moose and Whitey and Tony and Yogi and Bobby and Hank, what a remarkable team you were. And the stories of the visits you guys made to Mickey's bedside the last few days were heartbreakingly tender. It meant everything to Mickey, as would the presence of so many baseball figures past and present here today. I was honored to be asked to speak by the Mantle family today. I am not standing here as a broadcaster. Mel Allen is the eternal voice of the Yankees and that would be his place. And there are others here with a longer and deeper association with Mickey than mine. But I guess I'm here, not so much to speak for myself as to simply represent the millions of baseball-loving kids who grew up in the '50s and '60s and for whom Mickey Mantle was baseball. And more than that, he was a presence in our lives-a fragile hero to whom we had an emotional attachment so strong and lasting that it defied logic. Mickey often said he didn't understand it, this enduring connection and affection-the men now in their 40s and 50s, otherwise perfectly sensible, who went dry in the mouth and stammered like schoolboys in the presence of Mickey Mantle.

, a man of courage, heart, and most definitely integrity had many adversities throughout his life, but none the less he was a great baseball player . Mickey Charles Mantle was born on October 20, 1931 in Spavinaw, Oklahoma. He then later moved to Commerce a few years later. He was named after an awesome baseball player and Hall of Famer catcher Gordon “Mickey” Cochrane. Mickey Mantle would take many problems throughout his life, but those problems is what I think makes him the legend that baseball fans will never forget.
Mantle’s dad was Elvin “Mutt” Mantle and his mom’s name was Lovell Mantle. Mickey had three brothers. He had twin brothers named Ray and Roy, his brother Butch, and his sister Barbara. Mickey Mantle ’s dad was a lead miner in Oklahoma. He had a passion for baseball and even played with the semi-pros. As any other father he would pass his passion to his son Mickey.
Mickey Mantle
was 5-foot-11 and weighed 100 lbs. Many people thought he was very strong and muscular.

10. Ode To Mickey Mantle
Veteran sportswriter Maury Allen s moving portrait of Yankee great Mickey Mantle.
http://www.evesmag.com/mickeymantle.htm
Ode to Mickey Mantle By Maury Allen Associated Press The great Mickey Mantle, 1961. By Maury Allen The new plaque on the side wall of the old school building on the Upper West Side of Manhattan first built in 1882 glowed in the early afternoon of a splendid New York June day. "Mickey C. Mantle" read the copied autograph in glistening gold and under that it simply read, "The Mickey Mantle School Dedicated June 4, 2002." David Mantle, 45, and Danny Mantle, 42, the two surviving of four sons of Yankee slugger and baseball immortal Mickey Mantle and his wife, Merlyn, held the strings of the cloth covering the plaque. Now the audience, assembled on West End Avenue and 82 nd Street in Manhattan in front of the four story school building, could read the plaque. They had cheered loudly a few moments earlier when a red ribbon was cut by the two Mantle boys and the obligatory politician on the scene, Manhattan Borough President C. Virginia Fields, as balloons floated high and school children applauded. More than half a century after he first walked on the glistening grass at Yankee Stadium in 1951, the name of Mickey Mantle would now forever be enshrined in a New York school, this one for 200 children, mostly minorities, who were sent to this location as physically or mentally challenged students.

Mickey Charles Mantle (October 20, 1931 – August 13, 1995) was an American baseball player who was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1974. Mantle played his entire 18-year, major-league professional career for the New York Yankees, winning three American League Most Valuable Player (MVP) titles and playing for 16 All-Star teams. Mantle played on 12 A.L. championship pennant winners and seven World Series championship clubs. He still holds the records for most World Series home runs (18), RBI (40), runs (42), walks (43), extra-base hits (26), and total bases (123). When Mantle finished second to Roger Maris in the pursuit of Babe Ruth's home-run record in 1961, fans from Mantle's earlier days renewed their admiration. He spent the last years of his career as a wildly popular icon of the sport. Mantle was their hero; the blond-haired, gifted, all-around athlete from Oklahoma who overcame chronic physical problems to excel in his sport as few others had. Mantle died on August 13, 1995 at age 63 from liver cancer after years of alcohol abuse. On his tombstone were the words he requested: "A great teammate."

Biography
American baseball pitcher who, as a New York Yankee from 1950-1969, was at the core of the team that won 13 American League pennants and eight world championships. In 1974, he was voted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. He was married and had four children. All of Mantle's success, however, were jeopardized by alcohol. After alcohol binges and having blackouts for 43 years, he entered a treatment center for his problem on 1/29/1994. He had a liver that was diseased and damaged. He was close to death when he received a transplant on 6/08/1995 at 3:00 AM. Two months later he died of lung cancer, 8/13/1995, 1:10 AM CDT, Dallas, TX. Link to Wikipedia biography
