But baseball history will remember him as the home-run twin to Mickey Mantle, and generations of fans will remember him as the man with the asterisk in the record books: *Hit 61 home runs in 1961 in a 162-game season. The asterisk was inserted to distinguish Maris's home-run record from the one set in 1927 by the greatest Yankee of them all: Babe Ruth, who hit 60 in the days of the 154-game season. skos:inScheme http://data.nytimes.com/elements/nytd_per skos:prefLabel - en Maris, Roger http://data.nytimes.com/N69266981563343674853.rdf cc:attributionName The New York Times Company cc:attributionURL http://data.nytimes.com/N69266981563343674853 cc:license http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/us/ ... dc:creator The New York Times Company dcterms:created dcterms:modified dcterms:rightsHolder The New York Times Company foaf:primaryTopic http://data.nytimes.com/N69266981563343674853

Maris, Roger,
original name ROGER EUGENE MARIS (b. Sept. 10, 1934, Hibbing, Minn., U.S.d. Dec. 14, 1985, Houston, Texas), American professional baseball player whose one-season total of 61 home runs (1961) was the highest ever recorded in the major leagues. As this feat was accomplished in a 162-game schedule, the commissioner of baseball Ford C. Frick ruled that Maris had not broken Babe Ruth's record of 60 home runs, set during a 154-game schedule in 1927; not until 1991 was Maris recognized without dispute as the official record-holder. Maris entered the major leagues with the Cleveland Indians in 1957. From 1960 through 1966 he played for the New York Yankees, Ruth's former team; like Ruth, Maris was an exceptional defensive outfielder as well as a powerful hitter. Maris won the Most Valuable Player Award for the American League in 1960 and 1961. He retired with a career total of 275 home runs after playing for the St. Louis Cardinals in 1967 and 1968.
