Willie McCovey
Willie McCovey was a fan favorite with the San Francisco Giants when he shared the limelight with Willie Mays and the two formed a powerful duo. In the late 1960s he was baseball’s best hitter, hitting as many as 45 homers in a season, despite the fact that pitcher's worked around him often. The Alabama-native used his sweet swing to launch 521 round trippers – a record for left-handed NL batters, until bested by Barry Bonds. McCovey was elected to the Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility. Career Batting Stats G AB H R HR RBI SB AVG SLG OBP OPS OPS+

WILLIE "STRETCH" MCCOVEY
Willie Lee McCovey was born in Mobile on January 10, 1938. He showed a talent for baseball at an early age. During childhood, his friends would make him play right handed because of the number of balls they would lose from all the left-handed home runs that he hit.
His professional career began when he was signed by the New York Giants on March 12, 1955, at the age of just 17. He made his Major League debut on July 30, 1959, after hitting 29 home runs in just three months in the Pacific League. On his debut, he went 4 for 4, including two triples against future Hall of Fame pitcher, Robin Roberts. He went on to hit .354 in his first season and win Rookie of the Year honors.
He played almost his entire career for the Giants, playing for the San Diego Padres from 1974 to 1976, and then playing for the Oakland A's at the end of the 1976 season before returning to the Giants in 1977. He led the Major Leagues in home runs three times, RBIs twice, and he appeared in six All-Star Games. In the late 60s, he was considered by many to be the best offensive player in baseball, striking fear into the hearts of many pitchers who faced him. His most productive year was 1969 when he hit 45 homers and 126 RBIs, winning two legs of the Triple Crown, he also won the MVP. On April 27 of that year, he achieved the amazing feat of hitting three home runs in each game of a double header.
