A THREE-LETTER WORD FOR GREATNESS
BY BILL GALLO Sunday, September 12th 1999, 2:33AM If you are a crossword puzzle fan then you often come across two three-letter words. These two are steadies which you jot down automatically and sometimes they start you on a good word run. The hint: A little giant of yesteryear or a man of the rink not ring, but rink. Of course the rinkman is the great hockey player, Bobby Orr. Ask any young fan and they know who he is. But the other one? The other three letter word? Say Ott, Mel Ott to young baseball fans and they scratch their heads. It's for this reason I write today about Ott much more than the man in a crossword. So, this is for the young baseball fans who still have a sense of history and are not familiar with this Hall of Famer whose name only appears today in print when you write O-T-T to fill three little spaces in the puzzle. Here's Ott: He was known as a "diamond gem" even at age 16 when John McGraw, manager of the New York Giants, discovered him. At 16, Ott was sent to McGraw in 1925 and what the manager saw captivated him. The youngster had a unique, unorthodox, high-stepping stride with his right foot just before he brought his bat around. I remember every kid on my block (myself included) trying to emulate that swing, but it was futile. It was like trying to copy Stan Musial. Anyway, McGraw was smart enough to not tamper with that odd-looking, goose-step swing.
