Mel Blanc's Obituary This is the obituary of Mel Blanc that ran in the "Los Angeles Times" July 11, 1989. There are a number of interesting facts and stories about him contained within. Mel Blanc, the voice of Porky Pig, Bugs Bunny, Barney Rubble, Daffy Duck and countless other animated vertebrates, died Monday afternoon at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. He was 81 and had been hospitalized since May 19 suffering from heart disease and related medical problems, said hospital spokesman Ron Wise. With Blanc when he died at 2:30 p.m. were his wife Estelle and son Noel, who now does most of his father's voices. Known as "The Man of 1,000 Voices," Blanc was virtually never seen on the silver screen during the golden era of Merrie Melodies cartoons. Yet the myriad permutations of his acrobatic vocal cords have remained instantly recognizable by children of all ages around the globe for more than 50 years. Among the many lines he repeatedly uttered that arguably rival those of Shakespeare in terms of familiarity, if not intellectual depth: "Eh . . . what's up, Doc?" through the lips of the wiseacre hare, Bugs Bunny; "I tawt I taw a putty tat," from the tart-tongued canary Tweety, and "SSSSSsssuffering SSSSSuccotash," courtesy of Sylvester the sloppy cat. Not to mention Woody Woodpecker's signature laugh ("Hee, hee, heh, hah, ho. Hee, hee, heh, hah, ho"); both the laconic train conductor ("Anaheim, Azusa and Cuc-a-monga") and sputtering Maxwell auto of Jack Benny radio and TV show fame, and, of course, the stutter-strewn meanderings of Porky the wistful pig.

Real Name: Mel Columcille Gerard Gibson Birthday: January 3, 1956 Place of Birth: Peekskill, NY Education: National Institute of Dramatic Art, Sydney, Australia Introduced to American movie goers as Australian, the remarkably gorgeous, blue-eyed Mel Gibson actually came from Peekskill, New York. After a season onstage with Sydney's South Australian Theatre Company where he played both Oedipus and Henry IV, he made his introduction as the post-apocalyptic action star of George Miller's "Mad Max" (1979) and in the very unique "Tim" (1979), for which he picked up his first of two Australian Film Institute Awards as Best Actor, portraying the role of a retarded handyman in love with Piper Laurie. "The Year of Living Dangerously" (1982), a film about the political unrest of 1960s Indonesia, gave the actor his first romantic lead opposite Sigourney Weaver and launched him as a sex symbol. He returned to Australia to finish up the "Mad Max" series with "Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome" (1985), an awkward spoof with less action, a bigger budget, and Tina Turner and Max looking like a wandering mystic. He then took two years off to focus on his family, returning to the movie screen in "Lethal Weapon" (1987), where he created his most admired character, Martin Riggs, an hotheaded homicide cop teamed with the co-star Danny Glover. The film generated three sequels and allowed him to fit in his instinctive good humor as part of a depiction of a modern action hero.

The answer to this question is Mel Ott at the Polo Grounds. Ken wrote at 2009-04-14 18:46:25 The leader is Mel Ott who hit 323 of his 511 HR's at the Polo Grounds. He was a dead pull hitter, and the right field foul pole was 257 feet from the plate. Dennis Cullen wrote at 2010-08-06 02:36:32 The answer is Mel Ott. He hit 323 in the Polo Grounds, but only 188 away. He was a dead pull hitter, and the right field foul pole was (I think) either 257 or 275 feet away. Ruth hit only 259 at Yankee Stadium. Sosa is second on the list with 293, followed by Banks with 290. Mantle had 266 at Yankee Stadium.

The material on this site is controversial. Almost all of it is from published sources, but in many cases the accuracy - the truth - of the content has been disputed. Was that really the way it was? Mel Lyman was controversial. He was the brilliant folk musician who soothed the Dylan-ruffled crowd at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival , the Fort Hill guru whose prose in the undergound newspaper Avatar shocked conservative Bostonians of the late 60s... He died some 25 years ago at age 40, and the articles and writings included here start from about 15 years earlier, from 1963. It's "ancient history", but a little piece of it was also my history, and Mel Lyman was important in my life. He taught me something important, something that changed me for the better, and so I feel I owe him at least this, a place on the Internet. The last time I saw him was probably in 1967, so I have no first-hand knowledge of most of the events described here - I've never been to Fort Hill, and didn't know most of the people. It was because of rumors I read in newsgroups on the Internet around 1995 that I started this research - this site - to try to find some of the "truth" - to learn something about the Mel Lyman after I knew him.
